Douay Rheims or New American Bible.

Also don't get that confused with New American Standard Bible. It's incomplete.

King James Version is easily the best version. Nothing else comes close.

Try the Orthodox Study Bible. It's based off the Septuagint (the greek texts), and is filled with Iconography! It also has some books that the protestant king James doesn't include that were traditionally part of the Bible. Here's where I bought mine :) https://www.amazon.com/Orthodox-Study-Bible-Hardcover-Christianity/dp/0718003594

King James is top tier in a literary sense, but we've found much older copies of Scripture in the 400 years since James commissioned his translation.
>>
I would say Orthodox Bible> King James> any other translation, and thats coming from an ex Baptist who owns both those and ESV. Alot of translation errors in King James though. ESV isn't a literal translation so it is translated as protestants interpret it.

If the church is universal and existing since the point Christ founded it, then wouldn't the churches responsible for the first 1500 years of Christian history be the ones that could actually claim authority. I mean Christ was the fulfillment of the law, and he criticized the Jews for turning the traditions into pointless motions. Orthodox realize Christ is the temple sacrifice, the entire point. It is a replication of the ultimate fulfillment.

Yes, for the pentateuch. I never claimed otherwise. But the pentateuch is more accurate, as it was translated from an earlier source that predates the later different hebrew source that's used for modern bible translations. We're talking hundreds of years difference.

Scripture isn't everything. The contents of the official scripture were decided by the church, which is the pillar of truth. Paul talks about keeping the traditions that he and the apostles laid down. They kept priestly communion even back then. Everything the orthodox believes is derived from the early traditions and church councils when needed. We have no pope to interpret the Bible, the entire body of Christ comes together to decide the way it should be interpreted. The body of Christ must be united. We have 100s of thousands of denominations all because individuals wanted to interpret the Bible their way. What is the point of having a church if not unity in Christ?

Well now we get to a good question I'm interested in. Which came first, the scripture or the ekklasia? I'm inclined to believe in the ekklasia. Is belief in Jesus not the only means to be saved thereby being part of the ekklasia? Are all believers not unified in their salvation and love for God through Jesus? I'm not necessarily anti papist and I don't want to hate my brothers anymore with the zionists doing that and much worse, my agenda is to understand where the authority lies between the word of God and the men of God.
>>134506473
"It is significant that this is the first occurrence of the word Church (Ecclesia) in the New Testament, the only passage but one (Matthew 18:17) in which..."
Ekklasia is not a physical institution, once again, rather "those called out" so this scripture is interesting to me. I haven't studied it enough to have an answer for you, but as a theory perhaps the ekklasia he was building was those who followed Jesus instead of keeping to the talmud+Torah?

My counter question is this. If the Ecclesia was existent before the Church (physical church), then would not only the prophets pre Christ be saved? Most of the Jews thought the Messiah was going to be an earthly king, they had no way of knowing what Christ would be, and even the disciples didn't understand that Christ was fulfilling prophecy until after he did. Therefore a pre Christ church existing would be very very small. (which is why he ministered to the dead when he died). As for apostates (non orthodox) being saved, God is merciful. The benefits of the Church are not just salvation. It is true that those outside the orthodox church God willing would achieve salvation by pureness of heart, love of Christ, and the like- however they would be missing out on the sacraments, which is how we save ourselves from the torments of this life. Christ didn't come just to save us after death, he came down to save us in this life AND the next. I was a Baptist, all I saw were people around me struggling to be moral, yet they had no anchor point, no reminded outside of Church to help them be more Christlike. The orthodox orient your entire life around Christ. We have icons so that your eyes can focus on Christ, written prayers so that even When you are tired you can pray, Beautiful chants to turn your heart, and a host of Saints to help pray for you along your way. This is why I think western Christianity is truly failing, it is lazy. Listen to this my friend and tell me it doesn't bring you to a place higher then western music: https://youtu.be/lRHnr0JjKlU

James 2:14-17 What does it profit, my brethren, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is naked and destitute of daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, “Depart in peace, be warmed and filled,” but you do not give them the things which are needed for the body, what does it profit? 17 Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.
>>

>>
>>134508102
Nowhere does that passage say that works GIVE you faith though; they keep it strong, but only after you have it
>>
>>134508102
Yeah its dead because its non-productive, but not non-existent. Faith is for Jesus, works are for mankind. Men can't see our faith so they understand us by our works. Dead faith is still faith.
>>
>>134508102
>>134508339
also grace != faith
grace is what imparts salvation
>>
You cannot have true faith without works, just as you cannot have true works without faith. They are both essential to life. We are not called to be lazy believers. The Scripture says the lukewarm will be spit out. SPIT OUT. Christ was not lazy and those who claim to truly love him cannot be.

You're implying that there's a line drawn somewhere like a certain amount of missionary work I HAVE to do to get into heaven. The value of our works are not for mankind to judge. Can't remember the verse but God says something like how people will say "we preached in your name and drove out demons" and he'll say he doesn't know us. We can't stand on our works anymore than we can judge in eachother what works are enough.
>>
>>134507999
The degradation of a culture does not necessitate damnation, I for one assert there were zionist influences which pushed for the decay we see today. Music is tied to culture, and culture to a people. Wasnt the ekklasia the Israelites, or rather those who inherited the promise of Abraham? I think you may be seeing a branch to a tree while I am see a tree with a branch, the same conclusion and image but from different starting points of reference. To say that the institution of the ekklasia is part of the salvation sounds like a sense of pride in a group of people, much like the Judiasers. I do appreciate classical chants, I think they're in their own keys too which is nice and very hard to find and learn.
>>
>>134508516
Well he acclaimed Christ in public. He didn't have a chance to do much else. The point is this. If you have the chance to do works but don't do you truly love Christ? So many hate this because it convicts them. Every moment of our lives should be fully committed to Christ. The thiefs last moments were. As I said God is merciful. I am not saying works alone save, and I am not saying faith by itself cannot give salvation, but Faith will die without works, and those without living faith cannot have eternal life.
>>
God isn't real you retards
>>
>>134508664
I'm not implying that at all. There is no line because your whole should be given to Christ. Every work you do should be centered on Christ. That is every action. It takes a life of focusing to do this. That is why church life is so important. The Orthodox traditionally have Church every day and that is why.

It's not for you to judge the works, man. You can only control yours and saying you get why the thief gets everlasting life and other people aren't doing enough is borderline sacrilege.
>>
>>134508708
It had nothing to do with degradation. They simply never knew Christ and that is why they wouldn't have been able to be saved until after they died and Christ came to minister in the holding place during his death. Only the prophets truly knew Christ because they had the gift of prophecy. They are the orthodox church's first saints.
>>

You worship a jew and the jewish god. The book doesn't even get the names right.

Jesus wasn't his name. "God" is not the name of the jewish god. If you want to know where you came from and who your god is, read translations of the sumerian tablets.

If you are white, your god is the snake from the garden of eden. The god Enki.

I am not saying that at all. My very first statement was that GOD IS MERCIFUL. What I am saying is every moment of our lives should be works for Christ. I don't get why that is difficult to understand. I am not the judge, I am only saying that there is a Church that believes the whole Bible and equips the believer to try to live every moment to the best of his/her ability in Christ and that is the orthodox Church. I am not going to debate anymore because I used to be a protestant myself and understand your position. I spent years as a baptist. Even went to mission college. But when I started asking questions this is where I was led by hands other than my own. Love and blessings brothers, I wish you the best. Christ is risen!

>If you have the chance to do works but don't do you truly love Christ?

>not implying that at all

but are implying that you know anyone but the orthodoxy has chances to do God's work and doesn't do it.
>>
>>134499680
True, but anyone in an English-speaking country should also have a copy of the Vulgata or Vulgate, because traditionally Latin has been the language of the educated in our countries, while of course there is also the importance of understanding the vernacular for example from the 1611 Authorized Version.
>>
>>134509620
I would not imply that. I am not God. I can only speak for the Church, not the individual. I am trying to make a contrast between the theological differences in approach between each church and instead everyone is taking it personally. Which is why I will no longer participate in this discussion.
>>
>>134509848

Well obviously everybody thinks they have chosen the right church. You stated two pieces of scripture that were compelling. 2:15 Thess. I just personally don't come from that tradition so I'm guessing that the eastern orthodox church is not my path to salvation. It seemed like you meant being baptist wasn't enough for you and I'm wanting that confirmation for myself. If it was enough I honestly would join the eastern orthodox church. They just spook me with the worshipping the queen of heaven biz

We do not worship Mary my friend. We only honor her as the mother of Christ and ask her to pray on our behalf because Christ listens to his mother as shown in the story of the wedding feast :). We do not hold the same views on Mary as Catholics. There are several educated priests who have great pages online who can explain this much better than me a recent convert. I struggled with the same thing for along time until I truly understood the theology behind it. :)
>>
>>134510312
Also alot of Orthodox Christians do seem to hold Mary in a higher place than the Church actually officially places her. I think the Roman Catholic influence on many of the parishioners (members) might be the reason for this but we do not see her as as co-redemptress like the Catholics.
>>
>>134510773
That definitely helps me lean your way.
>>
Where does /pol/ stand with the RSV? When my grandfather past away I was given his bible, but I've never read it.
>>
It is interesting to see the protestant revulsion towards honoring the virgin Mary as even Martin Luther and John Calvin believed in the Catholic views on her. It's a more recent thing. Also for 1500 years the church held the official opinion that Mary was also resurrected after death which is documented by many sources. This seems to be completely forgotten by most protestants which is very sad. I can't imagine not showing love to Christ's mother is pleasing to Christ. I've even seen some people cursing at Catholics and Orthodox just for saying she deserves honor.

Revised standard. Its the book for methodists and methodists are god's chosen.

I don't think of myself as a protestant, but I do take issues with the catholic church and many other churches. I'm an american born into a family of non-believer divorced drunks so all I have is my KJV and an NIV I liked far less. The Jeremiah 44:21-23 is what scares me about the queen of heaven. Not that I strictly interpret the burning of incense to her as displeasing, but that it was somehow used as an excuse for greater inequities.
>>
If you are interested in Orthodox Christianity I fully recommend the Books by Clark Carlton. He was a Southern Baptist Seminary who suddenly converted to Eastern Orthodox and is now a priest I believe. He has a book for Protestants, a book for Catholics, a book explaining the general beliefs and a book explaining how the Orthodox view salvation. All extremely well written and worth the read. Called, called The Faith series.

OSB is literally heretical, and this is coming from someone who is converting to Orthodoxy. Just go NASB tbqh famalamb.
>>
>>134511539
Is the revised standard version good? I'm trying to get an answer because I'm curious.
>>
>>134511796
anon my personal look on that verse is more about God's anger at the Jews for not even attempting to be righteous while burning sacrifices. Basically using the sacrificial system as an excuse to sin.But If venerating the theotokos (Mary) makes you uncomfortable there is no church doctrine that demands it :)
>>
>>134511999
can you elaborate? I use that Bible and while there are some commentary notes I don't exactly agree with I haven't seen anything heretical. But saying NASB isn't heretical is interesting lol.

I had never heard that side of it before. I guess if venerating is different than 'worshipping as a god' then I can definitely see it your way. Glad you stuck around.

btw there is some confusion between the Greeks and English as to the level of honor the word Worship entails. For instance in Greek their highest form of praise is Magnification which they reserve for God, Mary and Saints get worship/veneration. Its kind of a lost in translation thing if you do hear an Orthodox say worship. We know what we mean when we do it lol. We don't give Mary the same place as the Trinity. That's why most people use the word venerate when speaking English about the subject to avoid confusion.
>>
Sorry that grammar might have been confusing. God gets magnification. Mary/ Saints get worship/ veneration. I didn't get it either Clark Carlton wrote a whole passage in his book about the confusion with English vs Greek names for different forms of praise.
>>
In the Western church protestants use the word Worship for every form of praise, and I think thats why when hymns and prayers get translated over people scream blaspheme when really its just a lack of words to translate to. Its kind of the same with the word Love. We have the word love while the Greeks have like 12 different types of words for different kinds of love. Hope I'm making sense.

This. They equate the veneration of saint to idolatry, maybe those iconoclasts should read up on what idolatry really was.

The best Bible is the one that is easiest to read for long stretches for you. I love the KJV, but the ESV and NASB are my daily readers. Keep in mind that no translation is perfect - they all have their pros and cons.

This is the exact reason why translation of the Vulgate into the worldly languages was prohibited for a long period of time, sparked with the medieval neomanicheans wil circulated a lot of bad translations and maliciously altered ones.
