You're a retard. Tons of Americans call houses bungalows. It's not a different word for house it's the architectural style, like ranch, colonial, contemporary or Art Deco. Pic related is a bungalow, the superior home type. The emphasis is on natural materials — wood, stone and brick. Wide front porches and low-pitched roofs are typical. The interior's open floor plan features built-in furniture, big fireplaces and exposed beams.
>>
>>134459213
Not very difficult, get rid of the turrets, use only two style of windows, and reduce the number of extrusion on the roof. Also the blog you grabbed this pic from is run by a dumbfuck leftist who praises the worst sorts of Brutalist architecture.

The big question is really just the front face of the house, or rather how it has 2 focal points. Makes it look odd.

Us McMansions look kinda ugly because they only cost about 300,000-500,000 to make. A European style mansion would cost in excess of 2 million. When you start talking about home prices in the multi-million it makes sense to use things like stone and expensive architectural designs.

In America(pic related outside my house) we have a lot of land, so it makes sense for our upper middle class to build large houses on a few acres right outside of town. Europe is so over populated though that the upper middle class can only afford some shack from the 19th century in a city.

if that red brick was light grey or black/charcoal, and then the white accents at the roof (and maybe a few more added) were the opposite color (so if red brick is black, white accent, if red brick is white, black accent) that would actually be a lot nicer. you pay cash for what? Some shitty little cabin? Let's see a pic, show us what real architecture looks like if you think these McMansions are so hideous. Also this might get your noggin joggin: not everyone takes out 2 mortgages to pay for their McMansion. Some people pay off their debt within 5 years or even less, and some never even take a mortgage in the first place. Shocking, I know.

The Spencer home used to be red brick before it went out of fashion just before 18th century. Looked great. Then they put grey tiles over it and rotted from all the English rain. The absolute state of this painting though!!!

That doesn't justify the absolute horror that is suburban american architecture; you could easily have a more coherently designed house with cheap construction. And it doesn't explain the prevalence of this garbage in places like Orange County or Palo Alto, where land is as limited as it is in Europe.

Frank Lloyd Wright anticipated this and even tried to come up with a solution, the Usonian style, but alas, plebbitry prevailed

Isn't that the interior to the Gamble house?

I'm a HUGE fan of Wright and he was correct in alleviating a lot of storage space in Usonians, along with taking away garages and instead having a carport.

I understand the security of garages, and everything, but they seem more like unsightly additions than aesthetic ones. If they're separate from the building, they can be fine.

People are more concerned with house big the house is than how functional it is. Gotta have kitchens the size of small houses.

No that's the point. I'm young now, but I built the basement into a self contained house for my parents. Both having separate bedrooms if their conditions dictate that kind of care. I have been in many nursing homes and I want them to be taken care of. They have a living room and kitchenete downstairs. The extra bathroom is a ,guest bathroom and it's next to an office.

I hate the idea of my parents being in some hell scape. But it is also for my siblings if they need a place to stay as well.

The yard hasn't been done yet because it is still under construction. I have 20 acres so there is alot to do.

I wasn't saying it was an FLLW work, just remarking on it being the interior of the Gamble house.

I know his work intimately. The Arts & Crafts style of G&G were somewhat organic -- their use of clinker brick was great, imo.

But, yes: residential architecture, as a whole, is pretty dire. Huge kitchens, huge bathrooms, huge bedrooms, huge everything; no sense of scale or aesthetics. It's just copy-paste floorplans for a quick buck.

If I had the money, I would love to build a Usonian, as I think it's the perfect style of house.
>>
>>134480002
I think a lot of it has to do with how modern cheap construction gets torn down and replaced a lot more quickly than older construction meant to last.

You could argue either way on that one. Starting fresh means you can upgrade the infrastructure more easily and cleanse out mold problems and whatever. But I think more importantly it represents a shift in mindset, which I think is really principle to even the OP.
>>
>>134479871
No one uses brick veneer where my work is based, maybe some interior walls that a client wants, to have some specific look. Most brick homes use poured concrete foundations with a brick ledge, that allows the exterior brick to sit on, under that is plywood sheathing and tyvek

That is a very lovely home. Unfortunately, for most of us that kind of living will never be a reality.

>>134479962

I always thought Japanese carpentry was really cool, even if very slow.

>>134480073

We plan on doing a wrap around porch for the house. The back of it will give my folks a place to go outside, be covered from the sun and away from the bugs. The top of it will give us a place to cook out.

>>134480468

It can be tough. Always plan for unforeseen costs, but in the end it just seems more rewarding to build. It can be a headache though. Take care of family and they will take care of you.

>>134480484

About 20 acres set me back about $42k from a very religious man who did not believe in interest. I paid it off with owners financing in 2 1/2 years.

The house itself set me back about $190,000.

He should have put in more of them really. I'm guessing he's just going to run the HVAC all year long, but it seems like kind of a waste of 20 acres if you can't sit and look at them as you die.

I have no idea how some interior designers find matching hardware for damaged locks and old shit. They can find copies of door knobs made in the 1920's.

Am I the only that likes these?
Sure, there's no architectural unity at all.
However, they're always wide, sprawling, plenty of windows, and the interiors are always well-lit and colored with light pastels.

Also, it's not like you can ever get bored of the place. It looks so different every time you look at it.
>>
>>134461597
It has nothing to do with materials, it is the mentality of it all, the total lack of taste among the rich and the people in charge of designing these attrocities, a total ignorance of history and tradition and culture. These are the kinds of people who unironically hang Thomas Kinkade reproduction paintings in their living rooms.

If you're in a smaller city, it used to be made by local manufacturers, so there's a lot of sameshit floating around if somebody was keen enough to scoop it up.

Proper Georgian townhouses, there's no reason for most people to live in suburbs anyway; they don't appreciate it or even do any outdoor activities and it just amounts to a waste of land. The issue is when people skimp on materials and quality but still demand something ornate and opulent

Yes and no. The bottom floor will be covered by a double decker wrap around porch. The bottom will be screened in for the folks to chill outside, thus hiding the door. The upstairs will be made into a grilling area.

>>134481684

Close, it is on the east coast. It has all the benefits of being near a large city with little of the negatives. I bartered with the builder and make the contractors work with me. Mainly that I had to buy all of the supplies and they charged for labor. I also counted all the extra materials and kept them. No walking off with supplies.

Yeah but the thing is mate when you're inside windows are great.

I went from living in window central to a place with few and tiny weird windows. It's just not the same when you spend most of your time not lazing on the porch and you can't see the outside or enjoy sunlight.

What do you think of this? I'm interested in the monolithic domes, but they seem to be hard to make aesthetically pleasing. This one makes me think a nice mason wall would pull a monolithic roof together.

so expand the urban areas, condensing suburban sprawl into urban housing should lower the prices.

Honestly the issues just boil down to niggers, spics, and assorted urban poor. We surrendered our nicer urban areas for a myriad of reason, but should just reclaim them and deal with the issues of niggers somehow. Stronger and assertive communities could btfo of blacks pretty easily. Less suburban sprawl, better and more expansive public transportation. The other aspect of this is development of towns and villages as well, the latter of which almost doesn't exist in the US anymore
>>
>>134482709
I don't know where you live but in Montreal the prices are getting too high to be affordable. A duplex can go from $380,000 to $650,000. A typical bungalow can be between $280,000 to $400,000. I live in a condo that is around 180,000 for a 700sqf.
