Us McMansions look kinda ugly because they only cost about 300,000-500,000 to make. A European style mansion would cost in excess of 2 million. When you start talking about home prices in the multi-million it makes sense to use things like stone and expensive architectural designs.

In America(pic related outside my house) we have a lot of land, so it makes sense for our upper middle class to build large houses on a few acres right outside of town. Europe is so over populated though that the upper middle class can only afford some shack from the 19th century in a city.

Meh This is my place. Almost done. Three floors, just over 3k square ft. 3 levels with basement 5 bedroom 6 bath. 2 kitchens, 2 living rooms. Basically a house and an apartment.

Did I do Ok? I went with traditional country house. White roof and white siding for the energy efficiency.

I'm a HUGE fan of Wright and he was correct in alleviating a lot of storage space in Usonians, along with taking away garages and instead having a carport.

I understand the security of garages, and everything, but they seem more like unsightly additions than aesthetic ones. If they're separate from the building, they can be fine.

No that's the point. I'm young now, but I built the basement into a self contained house for my parents. Both having separate bedrooms if their conditions dictate that kind of care. I have been in many nursing homes and I want them to be taken care of. They have a living room and kitchenete downstairs. The extra bathroom is a ,guest bathroom and it's next to an office.

I hate the idea of my parents being in some hell scape. But it is also for my siblings if they need a place to stay as well.

The yard hasn't been done yet because it is still under construction. I have 20 acres so there is alot to do.

But, yes: residential architecture, as a whole, is pretty dire. Huge kitchens, huge bathrooms, huge bedrooms, huge everything; no sense of scale or aesthetics. It's just copy-paste floorplans for a quick buck.

No one uses brick veneer where my work is based, maybe some interior walls that a client wants, to have some specific look. Most brick homes use poured concrete foundations with a brick ledge, that allows the exterior brick to sit on, under that is plywood sheathing and tyvek
