When I was a little boy dad would listen in the car sometimes, near the beginning. Dad is a conservative but eventually stopped listening. I can recall hearing Spatula City sketches. This was enough for me to get the basic idea of the show. Then teen years and my youthful leftist phase.

About four years ago I was tasked with taking the company pickup truck back and forth between two factories in town to move equipment back and forth. fiddling with the AM dial, I wound up back there... I never felt so All-American as listening to Rush while on the job in my beautiful hometown, being a productive adult.

I've been listening to his program regularly for about two years. I don't agree with all of it but it's usually informative and entertaining.

Also he's a hypocrite over his old drug scandal IIRC but that hasn't stopped me from enjoying his program recently. A nice recent spoof has been the send-up to the tune of "Jesus is just all right with me", with Obama: "ISIS is just all right with me..ISIS.. HAS BEEN CON-TAINED!"

His callers fawn a bit much sometimes and he gets flustered but he's always respectful with them, which is more than can be said for some other talk programs.

Three examples:

1. Before Harry Reid retired, any time that he was mentioned on the program, Rush would call him "Dingy" Harry Reid. There isn't anything about Harry Reid that is particularly dingy, but Rush consistently referred to him as Dingy Harry. Talk to anyone who listens to a lot of Rush and invariably, they will reference Dingy Harry, even without thinking.

2. Rush Limbaugh refers to the Democratic Party (its actual name) as the Democrat Party. Democrats don't call their party the Democrat Party, and generally the public calls it the Democratic Party. Rush (and later Hannity, Hugh Hewitt, Mark Levin, etc) started calling them the Democrat Party to irk Democrats and basically to disrespect them. Hang around any conservative relatives or on conservative sites?? Everyone calls them the Democrat party.

3. The entire time that Bill Clinton and Barack Obama were presidents, any time Rush had to refer to the whitehouse, he invariably called it "the regime". Under Republican Presidents, he calls it "the whitehouse" or "the administration". He does the repetitively 3 hours a day, 5 days a week, planting the seed in the listeners head that the Democratic Presidents are dictatorships, illegitimate, etc.

Rush is like every other shitty conservative AM host except he's better at it. His empire is built around sowing distrust of other media and then installing himself as someone you can trust who will tell you how you should feel and think about the daily news.

When you listen to Rush, you don't need to think critically about news or evaluate statements for yourself. Rush does that for you and then gives you the talking points that you need to argue with other people.

I actually do this regularly. If you follow the thread of what I've been saying above, you can understand why.

I do like some NPR content (Radiolab is usually a good and informative program) but it gets a bit much at times of course. A few years ago I remembered "oh yeah, there's this thing called AM talk radio which is everywhere, I'm bored of this, let's try this other one". flicked through the dial and boom.

I can also comment with some knowledge on what are the /worst/ NPR programs. The most liberal and shill-y programs include Sunday's On The Media (their smugness is horrific, even by NPR standards) and the daily The Takeaway.
