Sorry if any of this is a repeat... Home invaders are usually armed. I get not wanting to kill some idiot looking for drug money. A home invader knows you're home, and comes in anyway. Think about this, you are looking for an effective way to stop multiple persons, possible armed, intent on doing you and anyone with you harm. There is only one good solution: a gun. My suggestion is a shotgun (20 gauge or 12 makes no material difference, though 12 will look more intimidating). I would use low recoil 8 pellet buckshot. If you really want to be a nice guy you can even use less lethal loads for the first couple shells, but be careful about the laws in your country or state. In some states in the U.S., for example, you can wind up in trouble because you have to reasonably believe your life was in grave danger: and if you believe that you wouldn't use less lethal ammo.

If you've never owned a firearm, you've never felt safe in your own home. Trust me, you'll feel a difference.
