He used lenins philosophy to further his own gain. The whole point of communism was to take some power away from the rich people and give all people a chance to live a decent life.
But Stalins policies were focused on not only rapid industrialisation but silencing other communist leaders as well. In the end, he started promoting himself in many ways.
This is where communism begins to fail. Even after all that death and bullshit, some people would still follow him, but the moment he started focusing on himself instead of the state, he fucked up.
If a communist dictator tries to promote himself, it's no longer communism. It's something along the lines of monarchy. Hating the bourgeoisie is all well and good, until you realise that your government is stealing from you.
In a capitalist society this isn't a big deal because everyone steals from everyone. But in a communist society, this is the final straw cause one man is enjoying the life while everyone is working. After that, people start realising that they are not sacrificing for the country but for the government. For some, even nationalism is not a good enough reason to die. And when you are asked to die for a man instead of your country, people become even more enraged.

Stalin significantly reduced the amount of private property owned by Capitalists and land owners such as the Kulaks. The purpose of Socialism, sometimes known as the dictatorship of the proletariat, is to centralise control through the new state apparatus and take control of the economy thereby. This is the Socialist stage of the development towards Communism as understood by Marx and Lenin, which encourages military and political strength to defend from reactionaries.
>But Stalins policies were focused on not only rapid industrialisation but silencing other communist leaders as well. In the end, he started promoting himself in many ways.
These are both have their roots in Leninist and Marxist theory. Firstly Marx pushed that a country had to be fully industrialised before even considering becoming Communist, Russia was just a semi-capitalist under-developed shit heap before the 30s and so this had to change if the Union were to survive and aspire to Communist society some time in the future. Secondly silencing views which oppose decisions made by the Soviet political system originates from Lenin's theory of Democratic Centralism.

I still don't really get what he did that aggrandized himself so much that the state was pushed to second priority as a result.

No Marxist ever said that having a figurehead is anti-revolutionary.
