If McCain dies or resigns before the end of his term, the timing of it would dictate what would happen.

The Governor would appoint a temporary replacement who would serve until the next general election. But if it happened after the 2018 filing deadlines, the appointee would likely serve until the 2020 election. And if it happened after 2020, that person would just serve the rest of McCain's term until the 2022 election.

I think a 2020 or 2022 election is more likely than a 2018 election.
