I can't say I completely agree with everyone else on everything about this case, but I don't like the amount of money he was awarded. People can say whatever they want about his actions, but I realize how his age at the time of the incident made him a child soldier, so that complicates things if you want to see him locked up for what he did. People aren't going to like me saying this, but I should also point out that the guy was defending a compound that was under attack from foreign invaders, so the self-defense argument could easily apply. Not to mention that his confession was given while he was under what has been legally recognized as a state of duress, plus he wanted to simply just get out of a prison that was revealed to the world to be a hell-hole.

After all that, it's hard for me to be mad about his freedom. Not happy about the money, though.

This isn't unique to Canada.

There is a documentary series you can find on YouTube called Fighting on the Front Lines and they follow three different units in the British Army in Afghanistan.

One of them features a soldier who was from a Commonwealth nation in the West Indies. He decided to join the British army so he could earn his right to live in the UK. Long story short though he gets shot in the neck, nearly bleeds out but survives.

The real twist is that they discover the Taliban fighter who shot him is allowed into the UK as an asylum seeker, is provided a free house, health care and such. He actually earns more on benefits than the soldier who he shot did while deployed.

What can the average canadian citizen do? It's become the point where talking out against it can earn you fines and charges.
