The thing about common core is theyre trying to teach people something that should be somewhat natural. Theyre trying to teach something that is common sense. And theyre really, really bad at it. It just looks like gobbledygook when written down. I thought we had done alright in math up until now. So some nigger in Chicago cant calculate the trajectory of a satellite to slingshot it round mars, who gives a fuck?

I'd tend to go with

25-38 = -13
300-13 = 287

I guess the brown folk can't handle negative numbers.

Imagine you are progressive, where everyone is equal no matter what. But as you are teaching you see every day that certain kids of a darker skin tone do not perform as well. Now how do you rectify this belief against all apparent evidence while still virtue signalling how great you are?

Just use examples if the kid doesn't get it.

E.g. your house was worth $325,000 at the start of the year. In January, 10 niggers moved in down the street, as well as a paki family of 15.

If your property value plummets by $38,000 in the first month of them living there, what is your house worth now? What is your life worth, for that matter?

>>

The U.S. is really hurting in education.in my opinion a state controlled system is the absolute worst because the federal government has no idea about every single problem students face. Poland is a lot smaller with fewer demographics so it's like you're a U.S. state in terms of how things should be run.
>>
>>134282734
I'd support this for training people's mental maths. This is how I do complex subtraction in my head. It's a rubbish method for actual subtraction though.
>>
>>134283973
why do i hve to learn about george washington and memorize dates about a shitty country?
>>
>>134282734
It's just a method of teaching mental shortcuts during the early years of education.

For example multiplying 9 is mentally more difficult than multiplying 10, so if you're in grade 2, and you have a math problem: 9x6 it might not seem instantly intuitive to just instantly calculate that the answer is 54, so if you imagine that it's 10x6 instead (60) and then just subtract the 6 to get the 54, it's mentally easier when you're a small dumb child.

Just teaching shortcuts, obviously this isn't a practice that's continued into later years of education, this is grade 1-3 shit.
>>
>>134284793
>Poland is a lot smaller with fewer demographics so it's like you're a U.S. state in terms of how things should be run.
True, we also do not have problems with IQ distribution, since everyone is white. Actually, we are increasing the difficulty in schools right now

It's supposed to be good for mental math so you can count in your head when literally every kid carries an incredibly powerful calculator in their pocket at all times.

Supposedly it also helps teach fundamentals.

I think it just makes math look horribly intimidating since its making kids jump through hoops for reasons they don't understand when there are much cleaner methods to use like this one >>134283408
>>
>>134282734
I used to find these things in fun time mathematics (rough translation).

>>
>>134284793
There are two ways to solve the education crisis so things are equal, either make things so hard that everybody fails or make things so simple that everybody passes. CC is a way to brute force the problem by breaking down literally everything into the smallest discreet steps in the hopes that its so simple that even a nigger could learn it. But it's so rigid that it's actually discourages smart kids from excelling because they have a strict brain dead lesson plan to follow. There is a lot more to CC than OP has let on.

This works great because billionaires like Bill Gates who made CC can give this shitty approach to education to the masses and gate all the potentially smart but poor whites and asians in with the nigs and give a good education to the wealthy kids in private institutions. This way billionaires can be shepherds to the world while they push their vision for a new world global order because only their kids will rise to the top because they were the ones with the good education.

Glaring flaw in the last step. You have to subtract 300 from 325 to know that you need 25 to count up. Having to subtract defeats the purpose of this stupid shit.

This is education has gotten so expensive. Schools across the nation will be buying this book for each student in the class at around $100 a book.
>>
>>134289694
No, you count up from 300 to 325. You count up 25 times. That's how you know it's 25.
>>
>>134289526
You gonna write out pyramids of numbers every time you need to show your work? It works for mental math but you need legibility and simplicity like with >>134283408 when doing any important math for which you're going to punch into a calculator anyway just to double check.
>>
>>134283408

>>134291805
It's normally a form of very high functioning autism.

They used to have a series on tv called Extraordinary People (or something like that) and they had lots of people like that. They were all basically autistic but not the sperging out kind.

One guy could learn a completely new language in a week. He learned Icelandic in a week and what was even more impressive was the fact that once he learned a new language, he could then learn regional accents so he actually sounded like he was from there. That takes a very long time if you're learning a second language but he could do it in no time.

There was another guy who was flown around a city in a helicopter and then when he landed he was able to draw every single building and landmark to exact scale on a massive sheet of paper, it was insane.
>>
>>134292164
I know who you're talking about. The guy who learned Icelandic had an IQ of 190 or something, so I'm inclined to say that's pure intellect with a sprinkling of autism. The guy with the city (I think it was that black British guy) is just pure autism. Either way it's really interesting shit.
>>
>>134291029
Yes exactly, you would use something simpler than the count up method. You should work on that reading comprehension.
>>
>>134282734
Makes sense, it gets the kids to understand you're working out the difference in value between the two numbers. But I can see it being intuitive for children because they don't yet understand the concept behind it.
>>
>>134292421
At that point you wouldn't even need to use either method. You can just recognize it. Fuck you.

Accounting major faggot here. In my accounting textbook, the finance section takes two pages to explain the payback period in capital budgeting. Basically what it is is when a firm decides to undertake a project, the payback period is the number of years it takes to recovery the initial cost of the project.

EG: Project 1 costs 1mil, and the expected cash flow is 100 000 per year, therefore the payback period is ten years. In other words you divide the initial outlay (1mil to fund the project) by the amount of money you receive each year (100 000).

Now read the American version. Absolutely disgusting

I actually understand it fairly easily. Let's try this same concept with another number: Subtract 42 from 437.

42
+8 (circle this) Adds up to 50

50
+50 (circle this) Adds up to 100

100
+300 (circle this) Adds up to 400

400
+37 (circle this) Adds up to 437

Add up the circled numbers and you get 395.

437 - 42 = 395

>t. a Mexican and Black dude

It's actually a good concept to get students to subtract a way that may prove to be effective with students that struggle doing it the normal way. There is NO downside to offering alternative methods to subtraction. People that don't work in the field of education should really fuck off.

Rote memorization cripples flexibility with numbers for the exact reason you described. Einstein was also a believer that rote memorization is garbage teaching method. A method is easy once you've familiarized yourself with it to the point of full understanding. Shortcuts (memorizing times tables) allows kids to skip doing the work, making them lazy, kinda like how you sound "less painful as possible". It won't hurt your head if you stopped avoiding it with shortcuts.
>>
>>134297339
These methods are designed to equal the gap between whites and nonwhites. The nonwhites have trouble even reading a book, they aren't going to be shuffling numbers around in their heads.
>>
>>134297490
Lol, we are talking about BASIC CALCULATION here. Like, adding and subtracting numbers. Holy fucking shit dude.

You realize that higher levels of math have almost nothing to do with calculation? You can get through a graduate level math or physics test counting on your fingers. Instead, they involve higher levels of logic and reasoning, rather than successively more difficult calculations

When it comes to rote calculation, your literal goal is just to generate an answer. There is no "intuition" needed here.
Memorizing times tables helps you get to the answer faster. If you really want to rip off the hood and go back to basics every single time you do a calculation, you are fucking lost

That is my point, you fucking retard. You're just remembering the formula without doing the work in your head. That is why rote memorization sucks. You literally admit that all you care about is getting to the answer, and that is my exact justification behind why rote memorization cripples flexibility with numbers. You just want the get the answer without thinking, when thinking shouldn't be difficult for you if you don't rely on rote memorization as a mental midget crutch. No I am not fucking retarded, I literally have a physics degree hanging on my wall right now.

>You're just remembering the formula without doing the work in your head.
That's what you do. You work through the proof a couple times to make sure you understand it, then you apply it through a series of formulas that are (hopefully) easy to remember.

Do you prove a^2 + b^2 = c^2 every single time you use it? Do you prove the double angle formula every single time you use it? Do you prove product rule every single time you use it? No, you have these all memorized (or written down). If you want to understand how it works, you go back and work through the proof.

>You seriously need to count on your fucking fingers?
Yes, I do. And I'm also the one in graduate school, so apparently it works pretty well.

Look, I agree with your sentiment in general. But mate, this is basic calculation. There is literally no purpose whatsoever in having some sort of great intuitive understanding of how to shuffle numbers around. We have calculators you know.

Daniel Tammet. He's not autistic, he's synesthetic. Synesthesia comes in different forms. Some people always see the number 5 as orange. Others see the number 5 as a shape. Others, like myself, see music physically in front of them as waves of colored laser-like lines which arrange in different patterns according to the relationship between all sounds present. The echoes of large warehouses and uncarpeted spaces makes my vision blurry in a very annoying fashion, but grants many positive functions as well. Nikola Tesla was almost certainly a synesthete as well.

They're trying new ways to get kids to understand math in a different way because for the last 20 years, Americans have absolutely fucking failed in college level classes.

Maybe the average person here passed high school algebra and that's fine, but the problem comes when it's time to do calculus 1, calc 2, statistics or even college level algebra.
It's well known that most college students fail these courses and then they have to take non-credit awarding classes until they get caught up, which is embarrassing.
So since teaching math the old way didn;t work out, they're trying new things.

I concur, this is stupid. Sorry, gypsy teacher.

It’s basically like saying: you have to subtract 451 from 835, so you first forget about 35, and “count up” to 800. Also, you forget about 500-451 and “count up” from 500 to 800, which is 300, s-s-simple! Then you add everything you neglected so far (i.e. 35 and 49).

This is not wrong, but it’s just common sense. It’s like dedicating a page to dividing by 5 (“first, divide by 10, i.e. move the decimal point by one position to the left, then multiply by 2!”)

t. did maths olympics in school
