I think Antiochian Orthodoxy is a great vehicle for Orthodoxising America. Out of all Greek Orthodox churches, it's the second most universal one (after Jerusalem, obviously), and certainly the least ethnic one. For example, followers of the Constantinopolitan Church are expected to have some sort of Greek connection, and Russian Orthodoxy is definitely rooted in Slavic tradition.

But the Antiochian church, not so much. It's the most ancient church, and its culture has a certain plasticity in it. Perfect for America.

I'm raised Protestant but have been going to an Orthodox church in the last few weeks and am strongly considering converting. It just feels more spiritual.

Also despite being the in middle of Memphis, almost everyone at said church is white. And every young couple has between 2 and 4 blond hair blue eyed kids.

At my protestant church, my sister is the youngest person attending and she's 19. Almost everyone there is in their 50s or older.

I think it is a remnant of when the Church had too many candidates for the clergy and needed a method of whittling them down and seeing who truly is devoted to god. I think it needs to be relaxed now though with the lack of clergy candidates and I think it will deter some very good candidates.

It is a minor issue though when deciding whether or not to join the one holy apostolic and catholic church. The most important thing is to be a member of a church that is overseen by an apostolically ordained Bishop, and only the Roman, eastern, oriental, assyrian and old catholic churchs have apostolic succession. All other so called "churches" are outside of the one holy catholic and apostolic church even though some claim they are a part of it.
