They can do this in capitalism. The difference is under socialism you're not allowed to own something. You want a yard and you work hard to turn that into a field where food grows and you want to use that hard work to support your family? No, it belongs to the state. The food will support whoever the state deems most in need. You are not allowed to own anything.

And how do they enforce this? Massive police state, every time. Socialism is a mechanism for you to hand over everything willingly.

Communist societies destroy an old elite, replace them with a new managerial elite (college profs, authors, etc.), and redistribute most of the income of the deposed elite. But communist nations always remain very socially stratified; Stalin and Mao lived like emperors, while Raul Castro and Nicolas Maduro are fabulously wealthy today.

Communism is the most "feels-based" emotional ideology there is, and modern communists don't actually care about bettering society or have true empathy for the powerless; they only care about tearing down everything because they're deeply disturbed individuals.
