The Wehrmacht was essentially defeated after the push back from Moscow when they lost most of their experienced troops in the stupidly aggressive move to take Moscow before winter. This happened before the lend lease agreement or anything the allies contributed to the USSR. In the second year the Germans concentrated their experienced troops into the 6th Army which was then baited into fully comiting to Stalingrad but the Red Army trickling reinforcements into battle feigning they were on the ropes. There was never any hope for Germany to defeat the USSR they absolutely underestimsted their strength.

The Germans were far better prepared to invade the USSR than the Red army was to defend it. The Germans had something like 6 million troops including their allies while the Red army onky had close to 2 million. The Red Army also had just gone through Stalin's purges losing 1/3 of their officers. The Wehrmacht couldn't have started the invasion of the USSR on better footing and they still lost.

Your idea of the strength of Nazi Germany is based on Hollywood and video games which exaggerate details to make stories more entertaining..

Yes actually. Canaris actively tried to ensure that Francisco Franco didn't join the axis. If Franco had joined the axis then Gibraltar could have been captured and the Mediterranean cut off from the allies. With naval supremacy in the region the Axis could have secured Egypt and the Suez Canal starving Britain even more effectively and perhaps even linking up with Italian Ethiopia. Canaris was executed for trying to kill Hitler and he was the Head of the Abwehr so definitely it was betrayal. And the Wehrmacht had millions of troops from their allies as well as anti communist recruits from the occupied territories joining them. By the end of the war half of the SS wasn't even German. The Germans got far more assistance from their allies than the Soviets did. The Soviets got significant assistance from lend lease from the third year onwards but by this point everyone knew the Nazis would be defeated having lost 6th army at Stalingrad. The Soviets would have fared far better in the early parts of the war if stalin had listended to his generals more and not micromanaged. These are the mistakes Hitler would make later in the war

He's also written a second book while not as good goes into further detail about troop and plane positions and pill box fortifications. He got access to Soviet military archives when the USSR collapsed so he has information from both sides. Before this the eastern front was mostly written with German sources because the Soviets were telling shit.

The Germans certainly did not go down without a fight. In fact, it is quite rare in history to see a people so committed to fighting to the end. Even in 1945 a record amount of Germans remained loyal to Hitler. Apparently in 1944 when Hitler was reported dead after the July Assassination (Incorrectly of course) the people were devastated and looked as if they had lost a part of themselves according to reports. They preferred to surrender to the Western allies, yes, for the purpose of avoiding Soviet retribution and cruelty but that was really in the final months of the war when it was clear that no amount of resistance would stop the fall of the Reich. There actually was a resistance movement called the Werewovles (Hitler was known as Herr Wolf) and his HQ in the Ukraine was known as the Wolf's Lair. But unlike the countries Germany occupied, the war was over and the allies could fully concentrate on occupying a destroyed country. A lot of young boys were killed by the Americans on suspicion of being part of this resistance movement unfortunately.

Nazis were pretty much defeated after the first winter when they lost most of their experienced troops and were forced to concentrate the remainders in 6th army which was then trapped in Stalingrad. USSR didn't need lend lease to win the war, they were already winning. but it really helped them finish the war quicker than they did
