Former addict here, the treatment centers to help people quit thrive off repeat customers and they make things far worse.

They use suboxone or worse, methadone, and try to keep people on them for months and months, some advocating staying on them for life.
Naturally, people build a tolerance to opiates over time, so it just makes addiction worse for most, with very few managing to complete this dumb bullshit.

Putting up some PROPER treatment centers would be a large step forward, but there's too much money being made and donated to politicians for it to happen.

Just walked out of working in drug treatment services (personality disorder area) after 15 years - due to services being privatised from NHS to a charity. In all that time working with thousands of addicts - I can count one one hand those that moved from subsitute prescribing to being drug free.

At the start I had an idealised (retarded) view that a difference could be made - wrong as wrong could be - best to contain the situation with alternative med's - methadone and so forth and let them die off - most dont exceed 50 due to various forms of illness and shit for blood.

Governments are never going to stop the human desire for an alternative state of consciousness and therefore can never stop illicit drugs on the streets - so control it by legalising it and taxing it.

Give advice as per cigarette consumption - cut out the criminal element - lessen health effects and save the tax payer picking up the tab for the degenerate fucks. Maybe worth a try ?

Try and control the spread of fentanyl and even-worse analogues like carfentanil, no idea how you'd do that but they're the reason the opioid epidemic is killing so many people compared previous drug epidemics. Having said that, these people need to go supervised cold turkey if anything is going to change for them. In a fucked up way, getting through wthdrawals cold turkey gives a sense a pride and accomplishment, and no substitute means less chance of forming a new addiction.
The family is ultimately needed to be involved. Lack of close family or friends or being enabled by family or friends are probably the main causes of opiod addiction in young middle class american whites. That and a lack of identity coupled with drug use being made to look cool and edgy in almost all media.

Naltrexone implants make it impossible for an addict to get high. They block opioid receptors. An implant can last for 6 months.
So there is a cure to opioid addiction, but government is getting in the way.

First, legalize all drugs. Countries like the Netherlands have legalized almost all drugs and are doing better than us as far as overdoses and overall drug related issues go. We would do even better if the FDA was in charge of monitoring the quality and content of the drugs, preventing people from putting rat poison or random fillers in your shit. Personally I don't need to government to tell me what I can't put in my body, and neither does anyone else. We know heroin and meth are bad for you, making those legal won't make people use more (see use of marijuana actually going down in states where it was made legal). There are just some people who don't care, and whether it be fines, prison time, or even execution, people will still do it. The harder you make it to obtain, the more in demand it is.

Second, change drug "education" in school. Programs like D.A.R.E. are outdated dogshit. The issue with D.A.R.E. is that its main mission was never to educate, but to persuade. Nobody wants a loved one to die from drugs, but if your cause is truly righteous, wouldn't presenting accurate information/history be enough to convince people, as opposed to trying to indoctrinate them? Humans are naturally rebellious. Kids see a commercial with Hillary Duff telling people not to call things gay, and the first thing they do is call that shit gay (because it is). Simply telling kids what to do will never work, and making them write papers about how bad drugs are is just another attempt at brainwashing. Sidenote: People should be taught to self-educate if they DO choose to do a drug. AKA, go on google and look up "effects of ___" or "how to do ____ safely".

Third, crack down on the pharmaceutical industry. Everyone knows the current heroin problem is caused largely in part by people being handed opiate based painkillers like they're nothing. Take these doctors who pass this shit out like candy to court and get rid of their licenses.

Legalize Cannabis, it is less harmful than alcohol and is far better for pain (chronic and otherwise) than Opiates. I would know, I have major double Ulnar neuropathy, and it sucks without something. On days I know I will have it (even later) I am more inspired to get IT work done despite the constant pain. When I am using it, cannabis totally negates my pain and allows me to "get out" of my body far better than meditation or medications.
