In the case of Amanda Knox, the appeal court voided the initial trail judgement because of formal problems. Knox could have ended up in prison again, but Italy allows for a retrail in case of formal problems with the first trail. Most countries allow retrails in case of formal problems. I think the US and the UK are the only countries worldwide, which let murderers go in case of formal problems in the trail.

A retrail doesn't mean that an innocent person goes to jail. Amanda Knox was initially put to jail based on evidence with a judgment of a jury saying she is guilty "beyond a reasonable doubt". The second trail said they had some doubt, so she went free.

We all know Amanda Knox killed Meredith Kerchner. Everyone knows it. She still went free, so I guess Italy is also letting guilty people go free.
