I don't really hold that part against them as Star Trek has been around for so long, probably on a tight budget when it was starting out, and clearly the point is the drama and romance, not wowing the audience with special effects (unlike, you know, heh heh) but the overall package has never appealed to me, since I first saw a bit of it as a kid and till this day.

When Brian Fuller was at the helm and really trying to re-use old 1970's concept art to make a show that really had that Trek vibe to it, I was super excited. Fuller directed some really good Star Trek episodes, including a few of the genuinely good Voyager episodes.

But then it took the turn into JJ Abrams style nonsense.

The biggest issue for the show besides of SJW themes will be the CBS All Access. let me suggest try rewatching the orville trailer, ignore the jokes and think of them as people being people. Think of the time frame mentioned in the movie. They have 3000 ships that need captains, maybe right after discovering warp travel, and he is sorta the bottom end of the bell curve so maybe then its not so bad, but only you can decide.

This has been a thing for a while, don't really care, there's bound to be about one fag in a crew of more than 100 people.

Star Trek was pushing those limits in it's day, at this point though I don't really see what limits are there to be pushed. If two characters are well built up as being in love I don't think a sex scene would be egregious.

Hard to place whether this is good or bad, obviously ship2ship was never spectacularly ultraviolent like it would be in real life, there were a few scenes of people getting burned or assimilated, but most close in deaths have always been vaporization, or getting crushed by styrofoam rocks and ship parts. I think it's ok at the level that JJtrek set it, but the cast should not have to be wading through human viscera during a battle or anything like that, Trek was never meant to be that realistic.

On one hand, if you wanted more realism then yes a navy crew trapped inside of a pressurized can for months on end are going to swear a lot, but in proper Trek swearing has always been relegated to the role of emotional emphasis as opposed to casual vulgarity.

Overall though none of these shitty missteps is going to kill the show, it will be the fact that CBS aggressively sued fans for making a better Star Trek than they did (although they were selling merch and they shouldn't have been), this suit set a legal precedent that has screwed fan films for the foreseeable future. They made a blatantly JJtrek show when everyone was expecting a proper Star Trek, then lied about it being proper TOS even though it evidently wasn't, have shown some really really dodgy looking sets that look shoddier than TOS, and to put the cherry on this shit cake are demanding you pay for their shitty membership service to even see it.

pretty much they just think ppl are dumb enough to sign up for cbsaccess I guess around the world not even knowing what the show is, but scifi fans are a community.
