English, some French, and Irish. So I only speak one useful language fluently. I learned Irish from school when I was little, then when I was eight and came to America, I learned it in small bits from my grandparents. I'm well aware of its relative uselessness, but it should be preserved and passed down. It's a part of my family's heritage and culture to keep it alive.

Easy to become fluent in multiple languages when you live in an incestuous welfare state shithole like the Eurozone.
While Eurofaglords were learning Swahili, I was learning automotive advanced diagnostics.

Learning Russian was worth it since now I'm able to get a little bit of the other Slavic languages too. I only started learning it because I thought the Cyrillic alphabet looked cool, then just stuck with it.

Spanish is the only really useful foreign language in the US, so it's worth it to put some time into it.

Its hard to say really, because in a way I knew it before I realized it.

I was watching tv series with polish/dutch subtitles or playing games and I just slowly started correlating things, like "Oh, they said this word and the subtitles said it like that so this is what this word means" so thats how I learned the absolute basics.
When I knew quite a bit of words I started frequenting online forums and 4chan which further helped me with my grammar.

We're America, we don't need one, speak english if you wanna talk to us. Come here, speak our language, I don't think that's too far-fetched a demand.

I was trying to get my teenage daughter on board with learning Spanish, and one of the biggest hurdles was her lack of confidence to just speak it. I read an article about how easy Esperanto was to pick up, and thought it would be something for us to do together and hopefully boost her confidence in speaking a foreign tongue.

It sort of worked. She'll speak to me in Spanish occasionally, but only in very simple conversations where she's confident in her speech. If I speak to her in Esperanto, she always replies in English. I think she does it just to be a smartass.

It isn't about speaking enough languages. It is about having a smattering of enough languages that a native speaker can understand you at a toddler level.

I have toddler tier Arabic and maybe like kindergarten French.

What happens is you try to speak their language, they are impressed that you as an American can even attempt it, then switch to English.

I speak Dutch and English.
I rape the german and french language with extreme prejudice when I go to restaurants in Germany or travel through France on my way to Spain.

This is how I probably sound to a native german or french speaker:

>Endschwoeldiging, Ig moooochte gerrrn einem Kaffee, Biette
>jay voedrees un booteilje du vin, sie voes pleet

Still, this is a better method of communication than trying to speak english to the average frenchie or german, because they get maximum analpained if you do so.

I honestly love german restaurants, the quality of the food, the service and especially the pricing is way better than the Netherlands if you know where to go.

There's nothing impressive about Euros being multilingual - they're multilingual because they get brought up multilingual and that happens because the overwhelming majority of them would be restricted to their tiny ass country unless they learned an additional language/region.

Polyglot here trying to forget every other language that I learned:
The only language that should be allowed, English. There isn't a convincing reason to endeavor to learn any other language because they aren't useful and are actually very limited in terms of conveying thought.
They lack the rational word order of English. They lack the flexibility of English (see example below).
English does genderfy (note, you cannot do this with words in other languages!), inanimate objects like tables or cars.

It was a waste of time for me to learn all these languages over the years only to realize that learning these would only help to perpetuate these obsolete systems. I am a firm believer that the only language in the entire world should be English.
