Everybody always talks about fascist Italy and Germany, but i never hear anything or was taught nothing about fascist Slovakia. Was it a good thing, was it bad? Preferably from Slovaks but i dont give a shit if its from somewhere else.
Slovaks finally got their state after 1000 years. Economy flourished. Unemployment went down a lot. It was definitely positive for us Slovaks.

Thanks, my dads side is Slovak and its nice to know more. Is Tiso still looked at positively in Slovakia or is he regarded like Hitler?
>>134175994
Politics aside, wouldn't it be better in economic terms if you stayed Czechoslovakia?
considering the party that was installed by hitler in ww2 is still in power there

He is regarded a traitor.

Opinions about him are mixed. Some people view him as a national hero and some people see him as Hitler. Lots of people don’t know what to think or see him as both postitive and negative. He’s a very controversial and debated figure.

Idk maybe not.

Czechoslovakia was never okay economic-wise.
With EU in place it's just as shit but you have to understand one thing.
Czechia was always heavily industrialized nation. At some point they've literally made everything, you could've live using everything made locally whole your life. Slovakia was always more rural and agrarian.
This is enough to cause problems with even the most straightforward things like trade policy. Czechs will prefer more protectionist measures(to protect their industry) while Slovaks would always prefer more free-trade approach(because it makes export easier and they can get machines etc. from abroad for less).
The reason why Czechoslovakia was a thing was - in postwar years they knew there will be bigger fishes in sea, all of them craving for parts of their territory. What was then far-eastern Slovakia is now part of Ukraine, Southern Slovakia had big Hungarian minority, Sudetenland had huge German one, then there was a problem of Silesia. And it didn't end there. What if Habsburgs returned in Austria or Hungary? What if USSR figured out that it's good time for attacking them? As such it made perfect sense for them to create that weird federation.
In the 1990's it really stopped making sense. It wasn't like there were some ethnic disputes anymore after several waves of repatriations and they were going to be a target of some new aggression.

Makes sense, thanks lad.

though in 90's no Czechs or Slovaks wanted separation.
Referendum would have not passed.

Basically pic related

Took some classes on Central European history in college (alongside couple Czech and Slovak exchange students, actually) and the big thing about CZ-SK they told us was that Czechs basically exploited Slovaks for their dirty work, especially in the socialist era, where all these heavy industry factories and military industry would spring up all across Slovakia, yet most of the profit outside the job market would go to Czech part of the state. Don't know how much of this is true, but in terms of geopolitical reasons for the existence of the mutual state, your point is a really good one, so thank you for that.
