OP, don't worry about IEDs. To be perfectly honest, a lot of mental health issues are overhyped. That doesn't mean they are insignificant to the people who are afflicted,
but it's not common. Also, your chances of getting killed or maimed by IEDs now is pretty freaking negligible. We're more or less out of Iraq, combat operations wise, and in Afghanistan, our role is pretty tiny. There's no guarantee you will even deploy there depending on what you do. Even 5-6 years ago, we only averaged 1 KIA per deployment. And we were a Route Clearance company. It was literally our job to intentionally search for and dismantle IEDs. Sent a few guys home for injuries both combat and non combat related but the jist is, your chances are incredibly small.

All this being said, it really depends on what job you try to do in the military. I'll be blunt. The military is absolutely not family friendly. If you are a grunt, motor transport or engineering attached to grunts, etc you should expect extended periods away from your woman.
