My husband and I have started listening to Peterson's current Bible series. We just got through the first one, starting on #2 tonight. We've been searching for a church because we have young children and we want them to grow up with some kind of institutionalized western culture/morality, plus we've become sincere Christians just recently. For those of you like me in this thread who are atheist, I suggest adapting a paganistic sort of view of the afterlife, maybe believe in valhallah, or at least try to, even if at the bottom of your heart you know it's fake. One good thing Christianity has going for it is the idea of heaven for believers, which can be very comforting. Atheists should take a similar view, without having to subscribe to a slave religion.

When I was younger I dated a seriously involved with a Christian girl. With OP pov, I convinced her to go back to Catholic mass with me. She brought a realistic new age view of being a female. Vicar, as is used by the church, represents the concept of a legal stand in, a representative of sorts. To say the pope is the Vicar of Christ is not to say that he takes the place of Christ in an absolute sense, in the way the anti-christ does, placing himself in Christ's position. Instead it means that the Pope, as much as is humanly possible, takes on the same role in leading the Church that Christ did in leading the first disciples, not as messiah, but as rabbi. It does not ascribe to the pope any sanctity or divinity. It does not mean the Pope's declarations take the place of Christ's. The pope is not a false prophet, because he is not even a prophet. He is simply the leader of the physical church. It is his responsibility not to make new teachings, but to keep the dogma.

Anglo-Catholic church is weird and they're pretty rare. I was raised Episcopalian and grew up in the "broad church" tradition. The one Anglo-Catholic church I went to in Atlanta seemed oddly foreign and didn't feel right. It was a high church ceremony in a low church setting and there was a giant statue of Mary, so it felt odd. Rite 1 Eucharist, after growing up with Rite 2, also seemed different in a bad way. In fairness, I mostly like structured church services because they're like a religious fidget spinner.

The Anglican Church in North American is pretty based. It's a splinter from the Episcopal Church that's more conservative. The gay bishop in New Hampshire really turned a lot of Episcopalians off to the church.

The one I'm familiar with in Philadelphia is definitely a high church setting, as is the one I'm planning on checking out here where I live now. What you describe does sound weird. I went to an Episcopalian school and was married in an Episcopal church but I can't deal with how preachy and liberal most Episcopal churches are nowadays.
