The appearance of a character greatly influences people's perception of them. If we cast a little girl as the Gunslinger it's not going to have the same impact as if the actor actually looks like a rough cowboy like Clint Eastwood. They don't talk the same, they don't come off the same, they don't have the same personality and racial/gender implications as the original character. The Bond story is about a British man. Idris Elba was born in Britain, but both of his parents were from Sierra Leone, meaning he just comes off as an African regardless of nationality. If we cast a woman as Bond, would that have the same impact on people? Would it remind them of the original Bond at all? No, it wouldn't, and neither will this.

You don't even have to hold my opinions on race to see this, it should be obvious from a movie/story standpoint. James Bond isn't just "white", James Bond is Scottish. He has a distinct, deliberate ethnicity from a very specific part of the world and a very specific family history. He has a coat of arms with the phrase "The World is Not Enough" and pic related is what Fleming literally drew him to look like.

Another point is, it's showing respect for the original creator. Something Hollywood has trouble with. And I think it's kind of karmatic, if they don't respect he original creators their adaption loses it's spirit that made it good in the first place and it flops. (Like Ghostbusters).

And you never know if the author was honoring someone with the appearance of a character. I'm writing myself right now and when I write I usually base characters off someone I know in real life. So the character is immortalizing a friend or some other artist/writer I like. Changing the character destroys the intended legacy of the creator and dishonors them.

A good example is I'm making my own cape universe. One group of heroes are vehicle/car based. It's basically Fast and Furious meets The Flash. And one of the main characters who's an engineer and master mechanic is a black guy with a big afro. (This takes place in the 60s). I specifically choose this because I have a shitty car and I've been stuck on the side of the road before and had some awesome good Samaritan black dudes come help me out.

So creating that character, the awesome black mechanic, is honoring all those random strangers who were kind to me. I'd be pissed as fuck if they changed that characters race to a white guy even though people would label as a "white supremacist" given some of my views on race.
