The Confederacy while noble in many regards I think made tons of foolish mistakes. One of those mistakes being they never did enough to sell the cause to the common southerners. It's why unionist feelings were still widespread and those that did support the CSA were only loose supporters at best. The Confederate government needed to do more to assure the people that it was a fight for all southerners and not just the aristocrats and failed in this regard. Worse when many of these aristocrats then refused to even help the cause by doing something as basic as grow food for the army.

After the war, Stephens took up his pen to explain his view of states rights and the right of secession in this two-volume set. The second volume is in the form of a dialogue taking place at his home, Liberty Hall, between himself and various opponents.

I especially like this book, and I have several from Stephens. It's a soliloquy of thoughts & debates about the war. I have an original copy, 1868.

I think a lot of it had to do with Davis' career background as a military man. Didn't help that he didn't even want to be president either.

I just moved to Texas and these people fucking LOVE all things Confederate. I was always neutral/disinterested in the whole thing until I saw Confederate appreciation in practice and now I understand it. It is one very clear and well defined avenue for identity and legacy, which is something that is rare for people living in the United States. It is something that everybody here has in common and I really enjoy participating.
