They were either conquered or their resources and the environment changed, and though something might persist in its place it was effectively gone. The DDR obviously did do some good otherwise there wouldn't be nostalgia for it but from what I can tell it was no different from other Soviet states. Berlin was nicer than everywhere else in the country and always used as the center of their propaganda to depict a paradise but outside of that was still damaged by the war and the DDR had no money or interest in repairing it and neither did the Soviets. This of course is ignoring the Stasi. Aesthetically though they did have some good looks though. I like occasionally buying East German pieces at flea markets because of it.

Had the reforms been carried out earlier, and Mielke sacked/ the Stasi disbanded before the SED's collapse, then maybe the DDR would have lived.
Though even if it managed to survive into the 90s, I think reunification would gave occurred anyway once the USSR collapsed from its own problems and the Warsaw Pact promptly separated and had their own revolutions. Even though East Germany was more self-sufficient than other Eastern Bloc states, I don't think they could have survived that.
