That reasoning is very flawed and it is used on both sides. If Christianity is practically paganism and therefore a European religion then christians aren't following the word of god but a distorted religion and pagans might as well be christians since only the names changed.

Christianity definitely assimilated some holidays and practices but the core is very christian. Original sin, monotheism, actual worship of a god vs reverence to the power of nature/gods, semitic myths, those aren't pagan at all.

The history of Christianization is a largely peaceful one. it was only the autism of the East Germanics (Swedes, Goths, Balts) who caused problems, look at Wingurich.
West Germanics (Angles), Norwegians, Danes, Franks, Frisians, Visigoths, and Lombards) all converted relatively peacefully and got along fine with other Christians.

Orthodox/Catholics never denied this. You have to remember the society back then, most people were peasants (french Payen- where the word paganism derives from). What they did was to strip the costums of the people from harmful idolatry and replace the idols with God, Christ, the Holy Virgin or veneration of the Saints. Nothing wrong with that, and that way the peasants could keep their cultural traditions but without the satanic influence and the human sacrificing.
