Here in Italy you pay around £400k for a small detached home with half an acre of land around.

It depends where you live, some housing prices are fucking ludicrous in or around cities. Around the DC Area has some high prices in housing, its way cheaper to commute from two states away than live around the DC area.

Mostly a house is cheap due to either its old and needs a lot of work, shit location, located near a highway, sewer treatment plant, near government land, near a hazardous area, near a landfill, in a flood zone, in a sinkhole prone area, in a crime ridden area, and many more factors.
