Nah, the original idea came from Something Awful, where they had a contest to make a spooky image.

He didn't actually become Slenderman until someone saw the image and got inspired to make a Blair Witch style series of youtube videos that was implied to be real. That was the hoax.

The series go so popular that /x/ adopted the character, and then a game got made, and a bunch of other stuff.
