That said Dunkirk isn't exactly the Allies finest moment. It's a clusterfuck and the classic story of selling a bad strategic move and narrow escape from catastrophe as a victory.

70% of the dying happened on the eastern front. Without Russian resistance, without the disastrous choices in the east, D-Day would have failed.

That's indirectly the result of Dunkirk. The actual Truth is OKB removed Von Rundstedt from command as he was bearing down on the remains BEF and free french. So there was a 3 day delay until Hitler reinstated him until operations restarted but by then it wasn't enough time. Hitler then changed the narrative that he let them go to avoid further killing and as a hopeful bargaining chip in peace talks. The truth is he was furious as capturing the 200,000 remaining BEF and free french forces would have been a huge motivation for peace talks for the "Allies" at the time. The BEF was the entirety of the veteran soldiers and with them gone they would have nobody with experience to train new recruits and at the time they didn't even have recruits to train. They would have been fucked.

"my honor was loyalty" is probably one of the only decent movies from the german side. It does a good job of both sides did fucked up shit. Also follows three volunteers in SS Leibstandarte throughout their deployment from the mundane to fighting. It was an independent movie with a small budget but I feel they pulled it off well enough. Very accurate.
