North Korea and China are also republics. Our democracy is the ice cream - it's our <u>type</u> of governance. Every time we vote in elections, we are expressing our political will. This is known as Social Contract and it's how the people retain the authority over the government.

You could have a republic without democracy, like North Korea or Somalia, but the people who have that don't seem to want it. You could have democracy without a republic, but it's messy. That's precisely why our founders established a representative democracy in a Constitutional republic.
