Hello brother,

There are people with far more knowledge than me but the main reason is the background which preceded the famine.

Native Irish had their lands removed from them and were forced to be tenants. They had to grow crops for their rent and most could only afford to grow potatoes to feed them and their family.

The rural Irish, many of whom were subsistence farmers renting small plots of ground, were reliant on the potato for their staple diet, with anything else being sold off to pay rent.

So when the blight happened, the main staple of the diet was eliminated. and yes, there was lots of food being grown but was exported under armed guards out of Ireland.

I'm not the most passionate historian so someone more knowledgeable could chime in here but in any case, the Irish were priced out of buying any food and the British government of the time did nothing to look after its 'own citizens'. The Famine Plot by Tim Pat Coogan is supposed to be a good book on the subject for those interested.

What they don't seem to realise is that the vast majority of Irish people were poor. They were peasant class under the British system. Irish peasants were treated just as badly as English, Scottish or Welsh peasants.

The Scottish had their language and culture suppressed just as much as the Irish did. The only reason it never happened on the same scale to the Welsh is because they were much more remote and were more compliant. There are accounts of regions of Wales not knowing a word of English until the railways started being built.
