Architectural Marxism.
>>
Form follows function. Our civilization changed, they don't spend their whole life in just one house. Because of their job or other career opportunities people tend to move every few years. So they don't really care how their house is decorated or if it's just a modern cube. The thing with modern architecture is that it's very cheap, efficient, reliable and with much mroe space. In those ways it's better than old architecture.

>pic related in Japan
Japan doesn't have any "jews" or whatever reason you name for modern architecture. They still build tons of modern houses because of its efficiency.
>>
>>133939317
La Defense was purposefully created to be a containment zone for modern skyscrapers. It was a good compromise to keep them out of the rest of the city while conceding the business needs of large organizations to use modern buildings.

Roark was against useless decoration. Architecture through the ages has often been shaped by the local needs and materials available. Nothing wrong with a steep pitched roof in an area with lots of snow but in a desert a flat roof makes more sense. Roark would have been against building a copy of a French Chalet in Phoenix because that's turning the architecture into ornamentation and a functionality is wrong for the area.

One point to make about modernist architecture and city planning is that it actually isn't efficient or cost effective whatsoever.

Car centric concrete commie bloc style housing stuff people into homes unsuitable for children, end up in the hands of welfare programs and costs blow up massively. Parking and roads for cars push density down. Concrete blocs usually have design issues like heat bridges etc, and as seen in London, get glad in flammable materials to look barely a smidge better.

Those glass tower offices are disgustingly inefficient too. Glass facades leak heat in and out like a sieve and create local heat island and urban valley effects. The buildings themselves come under massive cost to build, far more per unit of space than traditional ones.

Its just the "in" style, and the vast majority of citizens hate it. Its a fraud by architects who have been contrarianised by their expertise.

With the double effect on zoning and space when you start building tall, even for residential housing, it works out far better to build at most 3-4 story houses with apartments end to end in streets.
Resident density goes up, resident satisfaction goes up.

Why don't we see more of it?

The graph will be similar for European population.
Population boom led to the 20th century wars for "living space", all ideologies fighting at the time had such projects.

>2. While global population did increase, so did production and overall wealth
Irrelevant, since LAND didn't increase. Especially in Europe, there is only so much LAND, and Europeans aren't okay with living 20 miles from where they work, so they spend a gallon of gas to buy a gallon of milk, like Americans are.
This led to building tall and compact buildings, to keep the city area smaller, while increasing population of the city.

As a personal aside I love the avant-garde in music, but in architecture that level of self-absorption isn't sonic exploration, it's public detritus and the stage of people's lives. It truly is revolting to see it thrust upon people and then tell those same people that they are simply beneath it for not appreciating it.

I'm sorta mixed on the subject...
For one, government buildings should reflect the tradtion and culture of the nation it represents, using traditional architecture. For businesses, it's a matter of utility over appearance. This doesn't mean concrete cubes, I mean the looks should come second. For housing, I'm a really big fan of a modernism/futurism style (pic related)

The thing many people don't remember about architecture is that the old buildings which survive to this day are specifically ones that people decided have value and should not be replaced.

Ugly old buildings were demolished and replaced with something else. The same will eventually happen to ugly buildings built correctly. The rare nice ones among them will survive, and the rest will be unceremoniously demolished. Then future generations might look at the nice survivors and wonder why the people of the late 20th and early 21st centuries built such nice things but most contemporary architecture sucks.

Also there's recently been a big revival in neo-historicism and other positive reflections on what good in relatively recent past. Pic related is a German building from 2015 harking back to the best ~1920s modernism had to offer.

Well yea that is obvious. Traditional style building is normal. You know 90 degree, regular windows and 45 degree angles. The most custom stuff is wood and stone work and maybe some windows. Normal stuff. Modern building is huge pieces of custom glass and odd angles of steel that needs to be cut and welded. It's a real pain in the ass but of course the architect doesn't care because he could draw it up on his computer despite never welding metal or cutting glass in his life. Everything on those modern buildings is custom and if anything, it's just a testament to how good some of the construction workers really are at their trades even if the end product is ugly shit.

One obvious thing to look for in sensible architecture are cornices which the worst of the 20th century architects seemed to hold an irrational hatred for. Their lack is often the cause of the disgusting stained look those buildings tend to weather into (especially the brutalist ones).

Not for me. I want a yard and a garage at the minimum. Need a yard for pets and kids, garage as work space. A home is a man's castle. They came in all ranges of cost.

In the end for better or worse people in the past used to be less sentimental and more indiscriminate about demolishing buildings. Imagine someone today trying to pull something like what Pope Julius II did - demolishing a 1200 year old basilica, one of the oldest and most iconic temples of Christianity, built over the tomb of St Peter, to erect a better one over it.

It's a false comparison because modernism and post-modernism is an extremly reactionary movement that explicitly discards and hates anything old. The more bizarre the better and unique basically

Old styles actually built on old styles and rules, particularly Greco-Roman rules. You can't possibly say they are the same as todays movements

Yes. It does look like its sole purpose is to make everyone *feel* equal. There is no unit of housing which looks better in that block of flats besides the insignificant details likely to be fetishized by muh individualism worshipers; there is nothing to aspire to achieve there, nothing to be jealous of.

There was this experimental suburbian project in the 20th century in US by some commie (and a jew, quite likely) who made all the houses of the same shape, (they only varied in color, I think). These design decisions had some ideological roots. Any anon knows what I'm referring to?

Also, as a link to Cultural Marxism, architecture being part and reflection of a people's culture, its purpose is to be as bland and unalienating to other cultures as possible. And it does look strange in the lands of a people who have historically been both creative and competitive through work.

Most styles were founded on the explicit rejection of old ones. For example Gothic architecture was rejected in the Renaissance and numerous Gothic style buildings were unceremoniously replaced by 'better' ones aping Greco-Roman styles (and later building on them up until the late Baroque) and would only return to graces in the 19th century when there were precious few Gothic buildings surviving.

What really *was* lost in recent decades is the craftsmanship continuity which would allow for a decent quality homages to older styles particularly in terms of detail, which is why most successful attempts at neo-historicism tend to be light on ornamentation and harking back as much to early modernism. For the most part it's not just out of a 'sense of minimalism' or 'good taste', it's out of a lack of skill - or rather the skill being so rare it would be too expensive for the average building.

I vehemently disagree that Gothic was a rejection of old styles, it basically grew out of Romansque architecture in both proportion and detailing. Ofcourse it became very different as time progressed but that's how the style began to exist and evolve

Same can be said for Baroque which is a mix of classical and renaissance, and ofcourse has its own style aswell as the style progressed

Modernism was by definition an explicit rejection of old styles

That's nice but that's not what I said you illiterate Slav.

It still drew inspiration from classical architecture, so I'm not sure what you're trying to say?

Architecture has never been a linear thing, it has jumped around a lot as highlighted in my previous post, but modern style didn't take inspiration from anything, it discarded everything old

I'm saying people rejected and replaced Gothic on ideological ground and people doing that is nothing new. They called it Gothic (i.e. barbaric) for a reason.
