Good god no. A grand portion of california is farmland and most of the farmers are conservative so they wouldn't even dream of seceding. The northern half of California is also heavily conservative and hates everyone from about Sacramento down so it'd give them a good reason to split off if it got that far.

In reality you have the Bay Area, Central/Southern Sacramento area, San Diego, LA, and a good portion of Southern California. You'd be left with big cities and no agriculture to feed tens of millions of Hispanics and rich white liberals in the bay area/LA.

Let 'em try. Unlike the UK with the EU, they're not really in a position to leave. Their budget is already borderline fucked, so they'll be totally fucked without any federal funding. And they'd need to import crops and water in order to survive. And if they had to trade with us under any kind of tariff, most of their high GDP contributing industry/companies would leave. So they'd at a minimum have to reach a trade agreement with us that is very unfavorable for them. Best case scenario, things would end up largely similar to the way they are now. Short of that, well...total economic collapse.

Arguably usa has more to lose in terms of trade than California. Obviously cali would need to import a ton of things from the states, but the US would lose 90% of its east coast shipping ports. That alone would sink farming in the Midwest which exports a ton through California to Japan and the rest of Asia.

The USA would be forced to invade. I think cali could aquire special superstars status through negotiations, but full on cali-exit is impossible.
