I am pro Trump since October 2015 and predicted his win back then, everybody here in Germany laughed at me, but as a matter of fact most people here didn't even know Trump at that time. My own gut feeling tells me that this cannot be it. It just can't be that western europe will fall because of that goddamn refugee crisis. And I strongly believe that Trump is the key here.

That being said, the AfD has personal issues. Frauke Petry wanted to kick out Björn Höcke, who is popular in eastern Germany, and it was all bad publicity. The AfD has not really a face or a charismatic as well as popular politician, that is a great downside.
Also the media is putting them down constantly, making people feel guilty for sympathizing with them. That is really effective.

But it's not that the AfD has a chance to rule anyway. Their numbers are just to low and they will never find a coalition partner in the parliament.
But they will have a huge impact after the election because as an established party in the Bundestag they get more money from the state and they will get a lot of speech time. That will spread doubts among conservatives in the CDU/CSU.

Merkel's plan is to stop the coalition with the SPD (leftist) and get the FDP (liberal economists) into the next coalition. The FDP has a very popular face (Christian Lindner) and already copied a lot of the reforms the AfD is suggesting in relation to migration politics. That may not be the solution, but it can be one step into making right wing statements more popular and less stigmatized
