1948 is a fairly easy and interesting read. Brave New World is good as well and I believe makes a lot more parallels to modern day than 1984 did.

Decent, I guess. The biggest point it has is that men need to occasionally band off together without women so that they can invoke their maleness together. Like hunting and shit. If you take women with you, the men will turn their focus onto them instead and you'll have a less fulfilling experience. There's more to it than that, but that's probably the thing that I took away the most from this book

I'd put some of the heavy philosophy at the end of your list so you are better read before jumping in. I'd say start with more modern authors then transition into the philosophy. So for example I'd go Junger > Alinsky > Rand > Orwell then start with philosophy, so Aurelius > ... > Nietzsche (Zarathustra) > Nietzsche (BGE).

Your experience will be a lot more engaging if you "train" yourself up to the harder books.

I think Taleb is (like a lot of people) a pretty smart guy who is not *quite* as smart as he thinks he is.
To some extent I think he is doing the "hilariously egotistical" thing a la Nietzsche and once you start on that ya just gotta keep on doubling down indefinitely.
There is good stuff in his books and he can walk the walk with the maths, but his writing is VERY rambling and repetitive.
Not sure that a poor prose style means that much though - they do say Kant was a bright fellow and his stuff is unreadable.

Has anyone here read Herodotus or Thucydides? I read them earlier this year and they were great. I'm reading Shirer's Rise and Fall now, it's decent so far

Practicing chess tactics is one of the many things better on a computer than from a book, I guess. I just read them in bed before going to sleep.

The idea with studying the endgame is it's supposed to train you in the low-level basic patterns which will help in all the rest of the game even if you never get to an ending.
That's the theory anyway :)
