He's psychologically pretty easy to manipulate. So after he went a little too far into being a bad goy, it was probably pretty straightforward to tip him into tanking himself and then pulling back a bit so he would sing the right tune in order to keep grasping at his lost fame and acceptance.

Pill addiction, alcoholism, inability to create and sustain a relationship, failed rounds of detox. Just like most rightwing commentators (and people here, I would add) he was a broken man struggling with his flaws and unable to find a role for himself that was building a purified and idealized version of himself in the public's eye hoping that he can live two lives, one that he's ashamed of and one that others would approve of.
