How exactly?

Low church attendance is but a symptom. Even before, many people did not really want to go there for faith reasons, but because it was a place to strenghten bonds within the community. You met your family, neighbors, friends and acquaintances, shared and discussed problems and did something together.

The underlying issue is the reduction of the smallest social subunit. Centuries ago, this unit was the extended family - people of 3+ generations lived under the same roof. The unit shrank and became the nuclear family of just 2 generations. Then it shrank again, down to the individual. People have become estranged, even within their own families. No one really knows anyone anymore, and there are no bonds left to be maintained.

Basically, we are too wealthy, and the state provides too much. As a result, the social fabric of the West has atrophied.

when I was old enoough to be in youth group, there were 23 people at my church between 14-34. Now I'm the only one and it kills me inside. I can't turn away as I'm multi skilled in organ playing, organising singing for 10 people, play an instrument. I'm basically the enterainment for the old farts, if I leave, it will kill me and them

I want to say that God is man made, much like say mathematics, you cannot physically touch the concept of math, but you can conceptualize it.
