I don't get why people are so obsessed with preserving "culture". It's all nationalistic jingoism, traditional culture and architecture is what lead to countless wars as different nationalities felt superior to one another. It's no coincidence that right wingers are obsessed with architecture from the 18th and 19 centuries, the peak of colonialism and imperialism where other cultures where viewed as inferior and relentlessly exploited. Modern architecture has the power to put aside our differences and unite the human race as one, not to mention things like fire safety and structural integrity which are vastly improved with modern towers.
>>
>>133829778
Why don't YOU try to engineer a modern skyscraper that doesn't look vaguely rectangular or a smooth curving shape.
Traditional architectural styles only works up to about 10 floors and then all that 'culture' starts creating too much wind resistance, costs too much or literally doesn't hold its own weight.

They own a large share of other cities aswell, such as Singapore and Moscow. I don't see it as a necessarily bad thing, they dont have ill intent per se, they just want to diversify their investments for a long-term plan unlike retarded countries such as Saudi Arabia which invests in military

There's nothing worse than a brand new building in a mock-traditional fashion.

Skyscrapers are things of utility, there's not a lot you can do with them. That said I think modern architecture peaked in the 20s with Art Deco and went steadily downhill until we hit the Brutalist shitstorm of the 70s

It's the same bankers and globalists who buy rotten pieces of trash "contemporary art", like Damien Hirst et al, for millions of dollars to signal their warped taste to other elites.

Think about what these glass boxes house: scores of money grubbing bankers, executives, lawyers, and similar parasites. Compare this with the spiritual purpose of a cathedral like Chartres or some ancient ruin and you will really think.

>Brutalist shitstorm of the 70s
As someone who despises all kinds of fashion and superficial advertisement, Brutalism is my favorite architecture, for its emphasis of utility.

You probably know this, but many don't, that Brutalism doesn't necessarily mean concrete. You can build brutalist wood or steel buildings.

I also wish more products were sold in plain brown boxes, just labeled with the an accurate description of the contents.
>>
>>133832039
But that's the same type of shitscraper only a bit more budget-y. Also this "glass is cyberpunk" meme needs to stop.

Brutalism is not bad to an extent. But it is proven that when built on massive scale it did create something akin to ghetto mentality. It absolutely does mean concrete, stripped one at that.

And I don't know what kind of utility are you talking about, those are large surfaces that serve very little purpose other than to make you feel small, but in a more aesthetic way than socialist realism.

Brutalism outside of architecture is good, I agree. But if we're talking about the buildings where people live and work then harsh, utilitarian bricks are soul destroying.

We're tearing down all of the old 70s stuff in the UK because there is a demonstrable link between people living in 70s built high rises and high crime.

They know that their glass shits are not liked by anyone, especially if it's compared to traditionalist buildings, so they'll do everything to fuck up historical buildings through demolition...
>>
>>133831562
Is it really?

What's the free market value of the Colosseum as opposed to generic skycrapers? Oh right, they don't even come close.

So the ''free market'' is essentially creating worthless copycats that won't last in history nor have any value in the future.

The ''now'' is the death of culture? Then it's the death of progress.

So yeah, modern liberalism is regress, it's not a case that it shows the same regressive traits in other fields.

99% of the time, yes. However the first house to ever be called Brutalist was this brick house, with very little concrete.
The expanded meaning of the word is just
exposed building materials, with no attempt at embellishment.

I concede that in modern usage, Brutalism is often synonymous with concrete

I think it is, but they're literally all like that. The reasoning was that they wanted to build a cathedral for the people, I'm guessing so that their travels to and from work were like a religious experience.

It's partially a scam (in terms of what's actually being built) and partially a horrible devastation of both the city's visage and the coastline (which wasn't used for anything other than a corrugated train wagons, but still). In terms of architecture Belgrade is becoming more and more like a slum in India or Pakistan - every square foot of public space is being used, quite savegely for shoddy construction that will become a slum in a few decades. Danube/Sava waterfront is a thing of natural beauty and it makes its squandered potential ever more obvious. Basically there will be few fat glass shithouses there, an empty shopping mall, and at this point I'm hoping Abu Dhabi (not sure how much of their real money is invested in this scam) will force the gubmint here to build a fuckhuge mosque. That would actually make the whole thing funny. Like, a golden one with giant green lasers.

Wow, that's truly awful. When I was in Montreal as a kid I walked most of the underground walkway (can't remember its name now), so I'm pretty familiar with how everything looked.

I've just always been fascinated by the different philosophies used in American vs. Soviet technology and art. Just compare how the guns or military planes were supposed to function. In Russia it was expected that a user could swap out parts or get his plane off the ground in the worst conditions, while in America it was up to the perfect functioning of the technology in perfect conditions - otherwise you had to get expert help. The Soviet perspective was actually more individualist while the American was bureaucratic and anti-individual.

The same applies to the metro stations, the cathedral atmosphere allows for individual experience while the brutal practicality of capitalist metro stations tend towards a universal non-experience.

Yeah, but Belgrade with its lay of the land had the potential to be something resembling current day London, a combination of new and old, and commies had the right idea (in theory) with development of New Belgrade. I don't think you could build skyscrapers around Sarajevo's old center and make it look good, especially on the surrounding hills. In Belgrade, there was a chance to do something with modern architecture but no vision whatsoever. The city itself is particularly ruined when it comes to parks and squares, there are very few public spaces and an incredible amount of filth and neglect all around.

It is the same problem with modern art.
They simply are not beautiful. And beauty serves a special purpose of uplifting the soul above the mundane and profane. Beauty is the language of God, and by scrubbing all traces of it in our built environment, we are muting the divine and transcendent world.

Also, these apartment blocks weren't Stalinist. They were built in the 60s. The Brezhnev era was adapting to runaway industrialisation, recovery, and most importantly the stiff competition with America and the Marshall Plan.

Stalinist apartment blocks looked like the photo attached.

you're right, there should be no more genders. unification will be better.

lets get rid of different races then too. unification is superior.

different cultures are troublesome. let's unify it.

now that you mention it, 4chan board cultures are too tryhard bullshit. let's merge everything into one gigantic social network.

never mind the impracticality of unification by dictate from third parties, screwing with naturally developed systems with lines thousands of years old. it's just more practical.

and if you disagree, well hen you're just being impractical. you should die, because that would be more practical for everybody. why can't anybody see the joy and perfection of practicality? we should make them.

only then will they understand how selfish, narcissistic, short-sighted and ridiculous they're being!

According to an urban legend, the commies built the commieblocks in the suburbs in a way that they force a circle around the city, which could be used as a defensive line if the city got besieged again in WWIII.
Postmodern architecture pretty much ended with the re-election of Fidesz in 2010. Architects are pressured by city councils to build buildings in a simpler way (crazy shaped buildings are basically a no-no).

The mayor of Budapest was a commie sympathizing jew after WWII. I think 28% of the buildings got demolished under his command, even though only 4% of the city's buildings got completely destroyed, and 7% was beyond repair.
And these are just the demolished buildings. Most buildings got a simpler facade, not to mention the communist jihad against the city's domes and cupolas.
The reds basically scalped most of the city.

The worship of the material world is also linked to the rise of communism, egalitarianism, and any leftist political movement. They share a common belief that, because there is no God, no afterlife and no ultimate justice, the state is viewed as the provider and answer to all wordy ills and wants. Just believe in it hard enough and government GOD will solve all problems. Except for death of course. But after we die, why should we care about what happens to this world, they say.

Traditional architecture doesn't fucking work at modern skyscraper scales. The entire building has to be sleek and flexible like a blade of grass in the wind or it breaks. Any ornamentation you add is a risk of getting ripped off by wind, or flex/shear forces within the building itself, and becoming a deadly weapon to whatever it falls on. This includes stone, brick, tile, wood, and basically anything that isn't steel, glass, or concrete.

function instead of form rather then function AND form

something as big as a skyscraper should look good to boost morale, and help people feel proud of where they are living or in awe of the city they're visiting. a great looking building elevates mood and makes people feel good looking at it.

this is another reason to make dull looking buildings, if you hate people and want to crush them psychologically with looming blocks of glass that blot out the sun.

I've noticed the same thing with mall areas. It's all exactly the same everywhere. Same stores, same restaurants, same buildings, same roads, same set up same soulless crap everywhere you go and everywhere you look.

Today? There was a store on the bottom floor. A Walgreens, I think. It was there in the 90s and early 2000s. Today it's empty and you can't enter it. Originally the NY Times (hence Time's Square) and, as you can see, Allied Chemical.
Times sold it shortly after building it.

This >>133848014 is incredibly shitty architecture because it only looks good on a map.
The scale of that nazi-crap is in no realtion to the human being, who is supposed to live there.

Good architecture and urban planning scales everything to the human.
A street should be no wider than the distance at which you can regocnize a face, for example.

Buildings have strict guidelines now

back in the day a building taking 8 years was normal so nobody gave a shit

nowadays Shlomo Kikestein wants his offices fabricated within 18 months, So it's just what comes with the speed. Easy to construct and doesn't look disgusting.

Is there any coincidence that style of architecture was pushed entirely by Jews and Soviets?

Even modern art was the result of Jewish art dealers trying to make a good buck
>>
>>133844222
I never get it, why should I expect Holocaust survivors to create beautiful art? Why should Libeskinde design beautiful buildings, why should Adorno write traditionalist philosophy, why should Stockhausen compose beautiful marches?
I mean, if you get in a camp, or if you had people you loved dying in there, I'd say that that resentmt becomes justified. We don't have to support it, but we can at least se where it is coming from.

While somewhat true this doesn't read into the entire story as to why American stuff was built the way it was. American doctrine operated under the assumption that any conflict with the Soviets was going to become a nuclear contest almost immediately. Having some shitbox that you can repair endlessly by salvaging motors from your lawn mower is pointless. The war would already be concluded after a month or more of conflict. The idea was to package as much capability into the air frame for it's singular month of total war before it was either nuked or blown out of the sky. If it wasn't conflict with the Soviets then you would have a perfect supply chain and having an expensive machine pays off since any repairs can be done in safety.

For that matter, most American planes from the Cold War are still operational unlike their Soviet counterparts. B-52 are still flying as are A-10 and some of the older F series. F-14 was only sidelined in the mid 2000s. Most Soviet shitboxes were scrapped because they were made terribly to begin with.

This is the one that hurts me the most, for some reason. There's so much space there to be turned into a beautiful public space.
You could very easily put in some flower beds, a fountain, a row of trees, and have a space where people would meet, congregate, eat their lunch and talk.
But no, beauty isn't in the modern budget.
