They were too conservative. My guess is the Jesus' recruited followers based on blind faith which is the riskiest of them all. That way he could be certain that they would be his followers.

I'm fairly certain they believed that God, or the Son of God or whatever, when he returns back to the Earth everyone will be united. And since Jesus didn't unite all people, he mustn't have been legit.
