I've long dreamed of having some land like this myself, but due to the fact that the UK is simply nowhere near as huge as the USA, land prices are pretty steep. If I was willing to buy land in one of the very cheap, relatively isolated areas up north (and I am, that'd actually be my preference) then I could probably get something like 30 acres with an extant farmhouse, for the value of my current home.

The problem is that my mortgage is absolutely nowhere near paid off so if I was to do that, I'd basically need to be prepared to turn the land into a working farm and run it as a business. I've no problem with that in principle except that I have precisely 0 agricultural experience, so it'd virtually be suicide.
