The kernal of the Dubia comes from extrapolating, inferring, and surmizing from a footnote in Amoris Leatitia, claiming it contradicts another document by John Paul II, and asking the loaded question about which document, in its entirety, was the valid one.

At the time of Vatican 2 there was a lot of optimism from younger clerics that the church could be successfully modernised to line up more with the mindset of the times. Benedict believed it could be done well.
As the 60s progressed he apparently saw the way global culture was going (towards degeneracy rather than just freedom), and had a sea change towards traditionalism.
In office, he was one of the only high ranking clerics trying to solve the pedo crisis, while everyone else was ignoring it, including JP2.
If you read his books, he's a great scholar, and doesn't shy away from calling out bullshit when he sees it (such as admitting the discrepancy in the dating of Christ's birth to historical events is very likely due to the guy who dated the birth completely fucking it up, as he did so over a century after the fact)
He suffers from the same problem as Enoch Powell - as a scholar, he's used to presenting arguments to people who do their research and understand the background context, he wasn't suited to dealing with the (((media))) who could take snippets of his speeches out of context to make him seem like a bigot, which they did.
He's not perfect, but I have a lot more respect for him than Francis, who seems to spend most of his time currying favour with non catholics rather than reviving the faith
