Remember the difference between Nationalism and Patriotism. A Nationalist takes pride in their nation's history, culture, ideals, and customs. For example, a German Nationalist would take pride in it's history, it's distinct German culture, it's ideals, and it's customs.

Meanwhile, a patriot simply loves their country because it is their country. A Portuguese patriot loves Portugal for the simple fact that it is Portugal.

In the United States we see a ton of idiotic patriots, however Nationalists tend to lean more on the intellectual side. They understand their country, and love it for what it is and has been throughout history. They love what it has stood for, and for it's honors and glories throughout the ages. Meanwhile American patriots are just "woooohooo God, Guns, and Glory!".
