The reality is that slavery hindered economic production in the South, it kept the South poor and aristocratic actually. There's a great quote from Alexis de Tocqueville, who visited the US in the 1830s, he said that when he went down South he immediately noticed that the main streets, unlike in the North, were no longer bustling. There was no economic growth, the people were lazy and depended on an unpaid underclass to provide their wealth.
