The nature of the scientific method is that we must be willing to change our answers if evidence suggests otherwise. There is no such thing as a scientific fact. You can add mountains of evidence to support a theory, but you can never prove one, only disprove it. By contrast, the religious answer is to make one claim and never revise it, even if disproven. If evidence says otherwise, you'll just say that God's playing tricks on us. We call this kind of theory "unfalsifiable," and it's basically useless for figuring out information. A good scientific theory should be measured by its ability to predict things. If the methodology is good, it should be applicable to other things as well. We've gone through a few methods of determining the age of things, and the current one, which involves radioactive decay, is pretty damn accurate. Nonetheless, if we find a better method, we will revise our current theory that the Earth is 4.54 billion years old. We'll feel like idiots, but at least it's better than believing a lie.
