I study serial killers and can say a few things

1. There are still serial killers today

2. There were just as many serial killers in the 1800s and the 1920s and 30s as in the 60s and 70s but during the 60s and 70s there were advances in forensics, profiling, FBI and police cooperation and joint task forces that allowed more serial killers to become noticed, in the past if a serial killer killed 5 people over a fairly large area then those 5 murders were usually investigated as 5 different murders not connected because police didn't really communicate with eachother and keep in mind the term "serial killer" was invented by robert ressler in the 70s before then serial killers were not studied and therefore were not seen or thought of as they way they are today that allowed more of them to be indentified so it seemed like there was a spike in serial killers when really they just started to become noticed and called as such

It's just:

1 - Increased surveillance and police capability has removed a lot of your "shit tier" murderers from the serial circuit. By that I mean that it's way, way harder to get away with shit than it used to be (I'm a not a cop, but I am an ADA and its crazy what they can find + how many old jew judges let evidence in because they don't understand wizardry like cellphones). As a result, you need to be more intelligent now than you were say, even just 20 years ago.

2 - The internet. By this I mean that now only do people leave more trails (see #1) but also people are exposed to WAY, WAY more information than before. So a serial killer is no longer national news. Whatever (((media))) you consume is more focused on shit like a nigger being killed by a cop, not on stuff like a series of cheap whores being sliced up in West Texas. Simply put, it takes a lot more to shock our conscience than it it used to, or perhaps more accurately we are too busy being offended over fucking Starbucks cups, so serial killers don't make the news like they once did.

3 - As a result, the serial killers who DO elude capture need to do something *substantial* (more than just body counts) to actually get the media's attention. This is of course discounting that believe it not, despite what your Pysch 101 "professor" may have told you, not all of them do it for glory, some have zero interest in the public fearing them. This has been true throughout history, a lot of them never get caught or "connected" - and thus never become serial killers in the sense of a media phenomenon (though they are still, by definition, serial killers).

TL;DR - Easier to track people, people give less shits and instead focus on getting likes for their selfies, the "good" ones avoid notice and the bad ones don't last as long as they used to.

Hypothetically, what would be the best way to get away with murder in Australia? My friend used to walk around a lot and thought that best method would be to scout out the elderly and lonely individuals. One day, sit outside their home until they come out to go to the water the plants or whatever and wait until they go back inside. At that point you force your way in and club them in the head with an improvised blunt object like some rock in the yard. You quickly kill them then leave. You then dump your clothes and shoes in a random bin and walk home.

The problem though is that it's not desirable. I think serial killers want specific targets, not some elderly random person that you don't even get to do anything with the corpse or play with them prior to death. That's the real challenge and probably why it's so common for hitchhikers to be targets since once in a vehicle they can be kidnapped, tied up and forced to go anywhere.

It's too easy to get caught. Not to mention, living in the city isn't the best option considering the high amount of Police cruisers and CCTV plastered everywhere.
