Unless they drag the person's map head around with them, how are they going to use it in a useful manner while they are escaping?

How much information can possibly be written into a braid?

Also, how would they get the information? A map of the immediate local geography of the plantation is useless since they live on the plantations grounds. A map detailing the local geography within a certain mile radius would be useful, but how could they get such knowledge to escape in the first place without already trying to escape?

Then there comes the part where you need someone ELSE with the map knowledge to make the braids so you have an elaborate enough style that can function as a map
