There were always Irish here, and they're generically about the same as the rest of the british isles (celtic/germanic/nordic). The only real assimilation problems were in a couple neighborhoods in large urban centers when new ones started to arrive en-masse during the famine and competing for jobs. Italians are mostly okay other than the southerners/sicilians.
