Family in San Francisco Earning $138k a Year Qualifies for Housing

This is a red board which means that it's strictly for adults (Not Safe For Work content only). If you see any illegal content, please report it.

There are less than 5,000,000 people in the SF metro area. The apartment in the picture rents for over $4,000 a month. What causes a jewing of this proportion?

> He doesn't understand how Capitalism works

For all the praise that this system gets, this board sure does hate it when they figure out they have no valuable work skills to use in a competitive market. Pick up your nearest economics book and turn to the supply and demand chapter and maybe you'll finally figure out why you have no spending power.
>>
>>133565867
>the supply and demand chapter
It's not just that. People are dumb and are willing to pay the price. They could just move to a cheaper city in the area, but they don't. It's the same thing for every major city.
>>
artificially low supply
they don't allow construction of housing
>>
>>133566119
I would argue that you're simply describing the "demand" side of that term. "Demand" is not inherently logical, nor is logic a prerequisite.
Economists lament constantly that humans are fickle and irrational actors. It's why econometrics at the phd level is insanely difficult; how do you solve for infinite human variables, hell how do you even quantify them?
>>
>>133566222
Frisco doesn't really have anywhere to build anything, only the suburbs which has plenty of affordable housing even immediately outside of frisco.
>>
>>133566222
>dingdingding
>>
>>133564142

Psssh have you been to the Bay nigger? Besides all the crusties and pieces of shit roaming the streets the peninsula is beautiful and the some of the properties out there look pretty fuckin sweet.

That and it's a fucking city yo wtf?
>>
Why the fuck should some rednecks in Kentucky subsidize some faggots who want to live near the ocean in 70degree sunny weather.
>>
>>133566316
nothing wrong with the 'burbs, but that's not hip enough for millennials
>>
>>133564142
The real question is why the fuck would anyone want to live in that liberal cesspool?

It's nice to visit once, but fuck living there.
>>
This shit is happening everywhere
Zoning laws and foreign ownership of homes and buildings is driving the cost of rent and houses up
Look at NYC, Seattle, Boston and LA. Students with tens of thousands in debt will be paying $1500 a month to live in a 100 sq ft apartment
>>
>>133566316
Most cities that had this problem demolished old low-density housing to build tower blocks for the poor.
>>
>>133565867
>housing subsidies
>supply and demand
>>
>>133566316
burbs still aint cheap
its all a shithole
fuck califagya
>>
>>133566119
>its not demand, its just demand
>>
>>133566315
Eh, there is an equilibrium in the supply/demand elasticity. But yeah, it's not necessarily logical, some will pay way over price for something and others wouldn't consider it unless they were getting a deal.
>>
>>133564142
that apartment actually looks like it's worth $4000 a month, plus it's in a popular location.
>>
>>133566119
People who want a high paying job usually need to move to a city. It's not about being stupid or smart, it's about necessity for the growing urban liberal elite.
>>
>>133566556
if someone will pay it than that is the fair market price
>>
>>133566514
It's more like inflation pre-fed and inflation afterwards. What should be and what actually is.

I live in SF. Pay $2900 a month for a 1 bedroom. It's expensive as fuck but I love living here. You can't beat the food. Pic related is my apartment
>>
>>133564142
Part of the problem is that we're not building or developing any new cities in America, all the jobs are staying in the same places and we're just jewing up the rent.
I know there are certain cities that are growing right now (because of ex-Californians sorry guys) and will likely become the next tier in American cities, like Austin and Salt Lake. But still, more cities need to invest, develop, and pursue businesses imo.
>>
>>133564142

>138K in frisco

Hopefully they're on foodstamps too.
>>
>>133566718
What can you do in SF that you can't do in Austin?
>>
>>133566556
Oh I realize I hyper simplified it, but for all intents and purposes, human economic actors have proven they aren't rational time and time again, although hell, even the term "rational" is up for debate. Is wanting to live in a busy city with lots of economic opportunity "irrational"? Is choosing a $5k a month loft when you make $55k a year and have 6 roommates "irrational" if you enjoy the comfort and are healthier due to the gym access and security guard?
Sounds like you could explain this a lot better than I ever could, my larger point was that value, cost, all these things are very subjective.
>>
>>133566489
Which destroys the sense of community not to mention the charm and appeal of the city.
>>
SanFranfag here. Housing is expensive but not that expensive. You can find a great private room for $1500 or live with a roommate in a nice unit for $750. Again, expensive, but certainly not as much as that clickbait would make you think, especially when minimum wage is $14 and there's a ton of jobs around.
>>
>>133566316
even Oakland isn't cheap anymore. You're half way to Sacramento before you find something "affordable"
>>
>>133566821
You can do many of the things you can do in SF, but there are fewer opportunities for those things in cities like Austin. SF has silicon valley right nearby. Anyway, isn't Austin getting pretty expensive as well?

Even at their full asking price the mortgage is still less than what you pay in rent. Not to mention you could easily rent like half that bitch out and cover most expenses.

San Fran is retarded dude
>>
>>133566975
By great I mean within walking distance of popular streets, your job, etc. You can live in a house with friends in Daly City or whatever and just do a 45 - 60 min commute to downtown and will have your own room for $900. Most young people have roommates here.

Government exists to manage the movement and security of capital. The government vs business dichotomy is pushed by the kikes to confuse the population and split it into two camps as a divide and conquer technique. It also functions as a divide and conquer method for your brain when you see the government and business as separate and competing entities.

I'll take privacy and heftier cash flow with cheaper cost of living over an Avocado-themed breakfast restaurant any day of the week, but that's just me

This. And to a lesser extent, the State governments are HIGHLY to blame for alloweing foreign ownership of properties and landlords who lord over MULTIPLE buildings.

The realestate market is almost as sketchy as Big Pharma, except they don't assassinate all-natural doctors and instead invite in more homeless because they own all the property in the city and rent them out to boomers from Florida.

Homeowners are lobbying hard against new development (because it would lower property value), so there is a housing shortage. It's been discussed at large all over media. On the one hand, this preserves the city landscape, on the other hand you get crazy high rent prices.

>>
>>133569194
we have tons of land, but most of it is desert or plains. most people live within 50 km of the ocean.

the high housing prices are really just the result of our version of your subprime housing market.

the federal government doesn't want any new cities to be created, and it wants to bring in 300,000 people every year (into a country with 24.3 million people), so we have a natural pressure on housing demand. our big 4 banks are pressing hard on the housing market. i believe in some areas (sydney, melbourne) we have a 15-20% year on year increase in housing prices.

everything is going to go to shit, soon. just 2 weeks ago all electricity retailers hiked electricity prices, by 20% in some states. perth is already in the middle of a massive housing collapse. some people there are on the hook for 4 mortgages at once.

They will have to go take the jobs the illegals left and actually see how the other half lives instead of couch surfing off their parents or pederasty from their gay roommates or e-panhandling through patreon and indie shovelware.

Why is this anyway? Wouldn't it be fucking great to just build up a Midwest white city into a real destination city like they did 100+ years ago with Chicago and Detroit. You take some nothing town like Cedar Rapids, IA which is all white, and move some big companies there, do some big development projects and let the migration happen. And naturally it would be all whites coming in for the white collar jobs. We could actually have a metropolitan city that isn't utterly infested by subhuman brown scum.

Yeah they do they just don't want to build a bunch of skyscrapers in established residential areas even if they could already tolerate a much higher density than townhouses or single family homes. Rich people would protest. We have a similar issue here in D.C. with our height restriction law. It keeps residential development out of central areas at the behest of the wealthy to the chagrin of the poorer classes.

There is too small a supply of high density housing in areas located near central work locations.

Want a redpill? As the world population increases the power of land owners also increases, why do you think all the land owners in Britain during the middle ages were Lords? Britain is an island with limited land and a high population to land ratio and thus the land owners gain even more power, this is especially true when the population starts getting more urbanized which it is currently basically across the planet. Landowners being powerful is not a new thing and was one of the cornerstones of taking control over the country. As long as people allow themselves to get cucked by housing and don't actually start making labor cheap again with DIY knowhow and true American spirit and elbow grease then, you will continue to live miserably under your pseudo Lords in CuckFrancisco

You fail to understand the key issue. The problem isn't just lack of housing, it's also the fact that anything a developer would bother building is going to be high end because of the retarded rent-control we have here. Nobody would bother building low or middle income housing here. Even if they did, that shit would turn into a roach infested hellhole because of the subsidies for illegals and hoodrats. We have more fundamental problems in this city than "not enough houses".

Also, there might be a few places we can build up, but SF isn't going to be tokyo 2.0 any time soon.

San fran have laws against construction. They don't approve any dense housing and almost all new construction is low density luxury. They also have shit transit infrastructure.

Basically San fran is a shithole of it's own government's making. They zoned off most of the area so it can only be low density luxury housing. They also stop any new construction and it takes 3+ years to get approval. Any apartments/dense housing gets fucked by "muh view" lawsuits and such.

The only free market movement is out of san fran and into other cities like Austin or north to oregon/washington.

Again a common pattern in all high cost crazy price cities

1. huge time to get approval for any new construction
2. Limits on height of buildings/hard regulations on building high density
3. Horrible Transit times into city and insane congestion / failed or horrible infrastructure

San Fran features every single variable that leads to insane home prices. Couple that with the fact voters / home owners love the increase in prices because they make money off it.

The only solution to San Fran is to not live in San fran or around it.

You can't into economics or common sense

If housing prices go up, people build more housing. The way this gets disrupted is if there is literally no more space (island), and the transit sucks.

Literally, the housing price shit is always artificial. You can easily go to places with better housing prices due to better city management/infrastructure and that is how you solve these problems.

The city government doesn't (or refuses to) understand supply and demand.
The tech industry is flooding the market with highly paid workers.
Chinks are eating up all the real estate, further driving up prices.
San Francisco itself is surrounded by water on three sides.

All of his combined and you have the perfect storm for a housing crisis.

Supply and demand. SF has a culture AGAINST development (i.e. """gentrification""") and a booming economy that's constantly adding jobs.

It's basic economics that these commies cannot understand.

it makes more sense because the light rail would be designed with gradual curves and everything just built around it if it was already there first. seeing the ones in europe theres a lot of tight bends from following the ancient layouts of cities so a 10 mile ride takes like 40 mins
>>
>>133579093
Wrong. The underground infrastructure is the most expensive. Roads/rail just need to be properly planned so that you have room and space for them in the future.

Let me just reiterate. San Fransisco is meant to be this way. It's by design. The way to avoid it is to not live in San Fransisco. The quality of life in the city is fucking horrible as well. It's just a big name brand that people are attracted to but there is no real substance to it or anything special. Weather is nice but it's the same all over west coast.
>>
>>133579093
SF already has light rail and the bay area has Caltrain, SMART, etc. Not solving anything except as another answer to "hmm where can I get high and panhandle today?".

The roads are complete shit but it's not the roads themselves, it's entitled people coupled with poor inter-departmental bureaucracy. When CalTrans repaves a road, guess what happens after the tar goes down? Think they paint it? Wrong, they have to subcontract out another department to do that thanks to the state government. So you get a paved road with absolutely no lane markings for weeks, sometimes months, before someone dies and complains enough for them to hand over the cash.

The sad thing is the Bay Area has a pretty healthy mix of people who like driving and people who like public transportation. It's the politicians who have continually passed the buck who shit the bed so hard that they can't make that work.
>>
>>133579786

>You fail to understand the key issue. The problem isn't just lack of housing, it's also the fact that anything a developer would bother building is going to be high end because of the retarded rent-control we have here.

This is very true. The issue is not just supply, but the fact that the cities and state tax the living shit out of middle class residents, and then give that money to poor residents to take up space. Rich get taxed also but have the money and clout to still get housing.

Pic related, rent control has unnaturally altered the market, where affordable middle income apartments that don't require a lottery simply don't exist.
>>
>>133579982
Well buy up properties to build your light rail on, buy the government to rezone it for you, buy the light rail, and then I guess with even fewer houses in SF it'll be more to your liking.

I get chills whenever I think of checking how the California High Speed Rail project is coming along. I'm afraid to even look it up it's going to be so shockingly behind schedule and above budget.

I remember just laughing thinking about it years ago and reading the issues. I think they have gone through multiple leaders on the project because they all see it as career ending.

California government is worse than Brazil government. It pisses me off to know all the celebs and californian citizens are fucking mad about Trump, when their own state can't build a a fucking ROAD.

>>
>>133580158
Road grades are pretty easy to handle to be honest. A grid makes sense as it maximizes space, but nothing else about the city layout makes sense unless you want to keep a city exactly one way for as long as possible. Which is the point, both for tourism and for city-level wealth exploitation.

It's awful. I've enjoyed watching the SMART passage in the North Bay, which was approved and started sucking taxes from me over a decade ago and only just started getting built.

The original line was from Larkspur ferry building all the way north to Cloverdale. Now it's just from San Rafael to Santa Rosa with about half the planned stops. And it's already a year behind schedule and ridiculously overbudget. Not to mention they ALREADY HAD A FUCKING RAIL LINE EXISTING THERE and only had to slap some trains on it. They even built the new stations with bargain bin aluminum railings and concrete slabs. Looks like shit and will make traffic even worse.

Wait, a california infrastructure project is a complete waste of money?

Next you will tell me they built desalination plants that cost 10000x more per gallon of water versus just not growing as many plants.

I live in Northern California. I have a great distaste for and distrust of anyone from Southern California and the Bay Area because they pull this shit and it fucks things up for my neck of the woods, and then they come here to where it's conservative and spread their propaganda. I'd like to either see SoCal and Bay Area have their swamps drained or I would like to see NorCal get to be it's own state. Virginia and Carolina got to become multiple states, why can't the red counties in California become one too? It would hurt the blue counties and it would help you all in the long run by giving you another red state.

Look at California HSR initial plans.

By 2018: The Initial Construction Segment (ICS) is to be completed — 130 miles (210 km) — Merced to Bakersfield.
