I wouldn't exactly say that California is anywhere near as bad as Illinois is. California has power spread out all over the place, the power isn't concentrated in one corrupt liberal city like Chicago. It is spread out all across the state. California still has a lot of industry like farming, tech, and entertainment. We still have a lot of conservative enclaves and cities spread all around.

I'd say the #1 cause of Chicago's demise is the pension funds. Its just mathematically impossible for so many people to expect the same quality of life in retirement as working on the taxpayer's dime. Illinois has a 47.1% pensions funded rate, while California has a 73.3% funded rate.

Exactly. Plus the IL state constitution is essentially a poison pill making it literally impossible to change pension benefits so the underfunded liability is going to continue to explode. Decades long corruption resulting in gibbmes plus a one-party system is a recipe for disaster.
