Where I live in Hungary there are no German speakers, and also in the Southwest their numbers are slowly decreasing, I have only met one guy who was a native speaker of German and born in Hungary.

Interestingly, most of us still learn German as a 2nd or 3rd language, but very few become fluent.

I see, makes senses, I am from the west so we had the choice between Italian or French, I choose Italian, I choose poorly, I was never really good at it and never used it afterwards and if you never use a language you might as well not learn it, by using it constantly it practically learns itself, you pick up stuff while reading, listening and talking, I doubt it would have gone better with French tough.

I don't know, I think it's a good idea to work together with neighboring countries in general, one could also act as a bloc inside the EU to balance out Germany and France a bit at least. I just read up on it and apparently it was planned to invite Austria and Slovenia but Hungary and I think Poland were against it for a number of reasons and apparently Austria then formed the Austerlitz Format with the Czech Republic and Slovakia
