I agree, with a caveat. Let's take the 19th century American Protestant movement to reform the Constitution for example: the National Reform Amendment movement.
These group of Protestants correctly saw that America would fall into neo-pagan relativism because it was not founded on any Christian foundations. God, much less Christ, was honored or mentioned in the Constitution. They saw this as our "original sin." After all, we are the first secular, godless nation in recorded human history.
Anyway, the movement failed and was called unconstitutional to amend the Constitution to be Confessional. And it was unconstitutional, because we are a State founded on a neo-pagan philosophy.

The movement completely buckled under the problem of its own theology; Protestantism. They tried to come to a consensus of what values a Christian State would enshrine and uphold. Because of the subjective, privately interpreting nature of Protestantism, they could not come to a consensus on much of anything.
The leaders concluded that they need an authoritative voice.. and the members exclaimed that the leaders were trying to subject them to the Pope.
It is comical and unfortunate, but it shows the inherent disarray in the system of Protestantism. In summation, it was an absolutely noble cause. They were just betrayed by their own deficient sixteenth century religious values.

The problem the National Reform Amendment movement had is not so very different to the problem that Hitler had. He began wanting to unite Germany under Christianity. Yet, he could not overcome Lutheranism and the inherent divisions within the theology. You cannot unite a nation under a religion that has its foundations in rebelling from theological authority, you end up with what we have today: thousands upon thousands of named sects, and even more plethora of unnamed sects. It created a "pope for every head."
So, as Hitler couldn't solve the Christian problem, he went beyond this to Germanic paganism.

Im also from the pagan side of the world. Estonia is one of the most atheist country in Europe. Our "religion" is (neo)pagan by any standarts. Its called "maausk", literally for "Native faith".

So on the topic of religion im not that educated, because i never really cared for it. Also communism did a pretty good job of removing religion from the minds of people.
