I think the primary should be a group of commies coming together to form a militia. It goes through a training phase, in some wooded area. Probably trained by some guy who went through 90% of boot camp before quiting. They'd have difficulty getting supplied, would have a crazy mix of weapons in their one platoon.

There was a ton of different political organizations that sprung up and they all had their own military groups. Many based on industrial councils(soviets). George Orwell fought for POUM during the Spanish Civil War. I'd make the fighters all be anarcho-communist students for the story. Units had a lot of problems with leadership because people wanted a council of representatives to decide everything.
