I work in a research lab, and I can tell you that a fullt-time job in STEM is not necessary a 9am - 5pm job. People often work from home or take short breaks for personal reasons. To stay at home with a kid or to take a doctor appointment or for something else. It sounds quite normal that her colleagues were understanding when she asked for a leave to sort out her health.

Mental wellbeing is another issue in STEM that many people experience. Many feel anxiety or depression, but prefer to not talk about it. I can understand that someone would actually praise a person for discussing mental health.

Javascript kind of sucks, but since it's a standard, people have no choice but to do serious work in it.

You can take a 2 week coding bootcamp for C if you like. I basically got my real start with a two-week "mini university" summer course on assembly/machine language.

It's true that more posers will learn a bit of JS or Python than other languages, but "only knows one language" is a much bigger red flag than "works mostly in JS". The real acid test is whether they can show you a serious solo project. No real programmer has only worked on teams, and doesn't have anything they want to show off that they did on their own.
