We (the Dal'Riata) invaded around the same time as the Saxons invaded England.
The Caledonni were proto-Picts. The Picts were/are Britons, not to be confused with the Cymri (Welsh). Pictland dwarfed Dal'Riata. So did Strathclyde, which was part of Cumbria (Cymri-a, The Old North) at the time but later became the Kingdom of Strathclyde (Strath-clut --- i.e. clywd). Wales in Welsh is Cymru - land of the Cymri.

We absorbed Pictland through intermarriage, after they'd been brought to their knees by Viking incursion. We merged. We didn't kill all the Picts. The new country was Alba.
Strathclyde and northern Northumbria weren't consolidated until the Canmore's (Gael-Saxon House of Dunkeld that intermarried with Norman's when David I heralded the Scoto-Norman age).
